I bought my Sony 775 SACD player without a remote or manual, so I don't know if it's possible to turn off the display?

If anybody can answer this, I'd sure appreciate it.

I ask because I have a feeling that it might sound better with the display off.

Yes, you can turn it off, but you have to use
the remote to do so. And it can only be set
to "off" mode once play has begun (else how
would you be able to tell what mode you had
    selected).

Check out one of the sites that sells remotes--
    the correct model is RM-SC500.

Can't say I notice any difference in sound with
    it off...

Actually, any Sony remote for one of their CD
players might work, if it has a display button.

A 555Es remote WILL work on a 775. They seem to be interchangeable.
