It still sounds good, it's quite loud and fills the room and sounds as good as can be expected from a one speaker 53 year old portable record player. It's not one for bass and detail though! Vocals and guitars sound best on it. I played an MFP Tyrannosaurus Rex compilation on it last week and that suited it well.

Do you ever watch all the displays and restorations of old record players like this, cassette decks, video machines and stereo systems on YouTube? There's thousands of them. You can find everything from your youth on there.

All those Glam records were made with record players like that in mind. They knew their audience.

Even up to the mid 70s the Gary Glitter 45s are still mono. Part of what gives them that unique compressed sound.

Could that 'some TV tie-in' possibly be the test pattern / signal breakdown music? In New Zealand back in the 70s 'Albatross' was sometimes played when there was a technical breakdown and you just got the test pattern until normal service resumed. It was quite a shock many years later when I discovered that was actually Fleetwood Mac!

    Really?
I just assumed that mono was a 60's thing.

Have you ever copied CD's onto your computer and then burned them onto a disc?
I was just chatting on the Bowie thread to a guy who made his own Bowie compilation this way. I have never even thought of doing that. I would really like to make for eg a glam compilation. I have all the CDs so maybe I should try it.

The 45s are, the same tracks are stereo on the LPs. I play Glitter with headphones on, I don't want my neighbours hearing him blasting out of my house! A shame.

Yes, I do it through iTunes.

I'm sure you can do it without that, though.

Do you have to pay for iTunes, or just if you download an album from them?

Only if you buy something from them. You can upload your CDs on there and then burn them to a CD-R.

Should have taken those two out at the start to make it more interesting, or worded the question 'your second favourite' or third if the Stones mob vote for the Beatles mob and vice versa, are you allowed to like both, I dunno....

It seems a bit of a ball ache to be honest.:)

It appears the Stones slightly edge out the Beatles in these polls to me..

It's easy enough. I've made some great comps.

I am definitely going to do it. I am so old fashioned, I like CDs and the nice packaging etc, but I have enough CDs to make my own compilations. Is the sound as good as on the original or do they loose something, not that I'm that bothered.

No, they sound just the same. I've bought lots of individual songs from iTunes too and made comps out of them.

I don't know anything about Itunes myself - I've never used it either, but I've made a few compilations by ripping my own cds using Foobar for instance. The biggest problem I find with this is that unless you rip them from the same series of cd masters you will get different levels of volume from track to track (loudness war etc), making it an awkward listening experience. This can be overcome with a bit of time and effort using normalisation in Audacity, but it's a pain in the ars* and very time consuming.

    .

Thought I'd post this 1975 spoof of the Jane Birkin single in the poll. Judge Dread did 'funny' versions of lots of songs back then. They were all a bit saucy and therefore automatically banned by Radio 1. This is very un-PC, and not that funny either. It was a big hit though.:)

If you enjoyed Benny Hill, you might like this.:)

Yes, depending on what CDs you use, @bob60, you will get fluctuations in volume on your homemade discs. If you've bought all your CDs in the last 10 years, you should be alright. Personally, I put up with it. I wouldn't know how to begin with Audacity, but if that's an option for you, it probably makes sense.

There were five other songs in the States that kept "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" from reaching the top, peaking only at #6. And it only got as high as it did - after radio stations initially avoided it in droves - because it was played at the end of one edition of The Huntley-Brinkley Report on NBC in the summer of 1969, as accompaniment to footage of the week's fighting in Vietnam. That recording by Rogers and The First Edition, I.M.H.O., is the most definitive, smiting all that came before and after. Even his own re-recording he made while at United Artists in 1977.

As for "Two Little Boys," it hardly made any impact in the U.S. where it was released on MGM.
