Does Feist Metals sound better than the cd? That redbook disc was a letdown although no surprise these days.

I would say yes it does. I haven't analysed anything yet (I will when I sort the BD drive for my Mac) but purely by ear it doesn't seem as loud as the iTunes.

I hope to give you something more concrete before too long, though the HFPA is far from a stunning night and day difference, which is both a shame as its a great album and almost to be expected given the state of loudness nonsense etc these days.

I will post the DR Of Exile on Main Street a little later when I am back home. FWIW and IIRC it is the same as, or very similar to, the SHM-SACD (DR11).

    Interesting.. Thanks Mr. Wensleydale :)

FWIW, I said on here sometime ago in Part 2., when I first got the Exile HFPA how good I thought it was (purely by ear again, I might add) but soon afterwards others started to get the disc and the bashing started.. and then once the SHM-SACD came into the equation, boom, that was the HFPA out the window! It'd be a bit, well, I don't really know what (ironic/funny/irksome!?) if it turns out they are the same or near identical when the HFPA's a tenner and the SHM is 3 or 4 times that..

I knew it! They're identical! Thank you so much for doing this Mr.W!

I tell you what is also encouraging, about the state of my ears, the track I said was a standout SQ-wise on the HFPA when I first got it, purely by ear, was "Shine A Light" .. and it's got the biggest dynamic range on it! Coincidence? Of course.. but.. it does sound superb! I was gobsmacked when I heard it!

I said on this forum back then that I couldn't see how the Blu-ray could be bettered and that it sounded the best I'd ever heard the album.. well, I stick by that now and the very respectable DR is a bonus.

To anyone who doesn't have the HFPA of Exile already, I'd say go for it! It's great!

Alright, I've bashed a lot of these HFPA's (rightly so imho.. many are crap.. and tried to be as honest as poss., so it's great to hear that you got it on my rec and it's turned out to be such a good'un!

Yeay! Yeay! You're v.welcome. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

When Universal get these HFPA's right, they really are excellent. When they get them wrong.. oh are they duff!

I think UMe need to start garnering feedback from sites such as this (and now QuadraphonicQuad and SA-CD.net are very active with chat about HFPA and BD-A) so they can raise the overall standard of releases and with a bit of luck, keep the standard high.

Does Ken Scott show up here anymore? Would love to hear some chatter about this one.

I read a post on an Elton thread saying they hadn't seen him on here in a while :(

Even so, I think the whole things been kept pretty much under wraps, the 40th anniversary is going to be a huge deal for Universal, from what I can gather.

afaik, there'll be a 2-disc Deluxe Edition, HFPA Blu-ray and Super Deluxe set.

most elements have been ready for a while apparently but Ken Scott has been really busy remixing live material into 5.1 for a DVD. I don't know if the DVD is only in the Super Deluxe or also in the Deluxe or what its all about, I'm afraid.

that's all I have right now, I've been trying to find out more but no joy sadly.

FWIW, I absolutely cannot wait for this, its a masterpiece of an album that truly deserves the special treatment and I'm thrilled Mr.Scott is at the helm, rightly so -- and you can bet it won't have the DR sucked out of it with him doing the remaster!

Well I have just finished listening to exile right now and thought I would post my thoughts , and it sounds very nice indeed , thanks for the info.
Interestingly it seems that the mp3 download is the new remaster because it is very very loud.
I have the virgin disc also so I can post a picture of the waveform from my three sources if anyone is interested?

I'm glad you're enjoying the BDA :) it's disappointing the download uses the (horrible) remaster.. please do post waveforms when you have the time.

    Versions of "happy"
This is the mp3 download which I presume is the latest remaster! image.jpg
This is the same track From the blu ray of Grrrr. image.jpg
Then the Virgin master of the same track. image.jpg
And then the new blu ray audio. image.jpg

Quite a big difference between all four versions . With the MP3 download(which I presume is the newest remaster since all the negative feedback that it got) being as hard on the eyes as it is on the ears:D

That Blu-ray sounds superb, any fans of The Stones and/or the album simply have to get the Blu-ray.

Thanks once again for the info.

I don't think you'll regret it. Back when I got the BD last year, I was staggered at how good some stuff on it sounded. Shine A Light, really, I know I've been going on about it for months (!) but I've never heard it sound so good.

If all these HFPA Blu-ray's were as good as this, we'd be in clover.

Wasn't Exile on Main Street problematic with fluctuating sound levels? Seems to me rstamberg may have posted along with a few others.

there are other HFPA's that suffer from that (Bob Marley is particularly bad) but I don't recall it on the Exile, I'll check tonight.
