I knew all the musicians and got all the references - I just didn't think they were funny.

Felt like the movie wanted to impress us with these references - it's just a catalog of allusions to musical artists/events without real inspiration, IMO...

I haven't seen "Gangs" in years but I recently got the Blu-ray on the cheap, so I'll give it a refresher soon! :righton:

I love Walk Hard, mainly due to John C. Reilly's performance -- the 10 minutes or so before he shows up are a real slog. I never felt like the references were designed to impress; for me they were honest laughs from funny writers who are sincere deep music geeks. But if it didn't make you laugh, I don't expect to convince you (just as you won't convince me that, say, Jimmy Fallon is funny). But man, I laugh just thinking about Dewey trying LSD and in the next shot jumping on a trampoline 6 months later :)

I understand that sentiment. I love the movie, but it does appeal to a very specific sense of humor.

One of my friends *hated* it the first time he saw it. Then, after being forced to watch it again at another friend's house, it became his favorite movie of all time. This was after two years of psychiatric residency, so something in his brain may have fried in the interim, but it enjoying it appears to need a certain perspective not everyone has.

With Walk Hard there is only one redeeming thing about that movie:

Don't you mean Yanny and Hardy?

  10. You should watch it without the laugh track. It's not only unfunny, it's painful. It almost becomes funny in its existential badness. Anyway, I have no idea why it's so popular either.

Roseanne, both the original and the reboot. Just painfully unfunny.

BLASPHEMY (and he was talking obviously about the 2012 movie REMAKE, NOT the original.)

  15. Really? I love Monty Python and The Marx Brothers. The Three Stooges appealed to me when I was 8 not so much anymore. The Marx Brothers best comedies were those they made before they moved to MGM.

Reilly is great in a couple other Pt Anderson movies (hard 8 and magnolia) and a few early roles state of grace and casualties of war - his first role)
not really fond of his Farrell movies - Talladega nights etc....step brothers was ok but I guess not my cup of tea. but one of those probably make more than most of his 'serious' roles so I guess it makes sense (I think hes friends with will as well)

  20. It should. It's a "best of" from a large number of existing comics.

MASH, the tv show. Early on it was a bit funny. Later, preachy. The move, on the other hand was great.

The TV series of M*A*S*H generally ceased to be a comedy when Frank Burns leaves (end of season 5). It's still a good show after that but it's not a comedy.

It was bad enough then, but now Robert Hughes (who played the father of the Kelly family) is in jail for some terrible historic offenses it's utterly unwatchable.

Another Aussie show that has some decidedly unfunny bits is sketch show The Comedy Company. Some of the characters like Colin Carpenter & Uncle Arthur still raise a giggle, but others like Con the Fruiterer and Kylie Mole are just cringe material.
