Was Pete Best really that bad of a drummer?

I disagree in that Pete was a damn good looking chap in a band of very talented and stylish dorks but still dorks. Ringo was a fellow dork. The other Beatles didn’t fit Pete’s image.

Pete as I said looked like a Pop STAR from the late 50s-early 60s. Dion, Bobby Darin, that sort of thing. If he'd been a good singer he could've easily good that route. But paired with the other three he just looks out of place. He looks too American, too rough, and yes, too good looking. The Beatles were never conventionally attractive men and having him there threw off the whole thing.

It wasn't really a "club" in the usual sense. It was just a den in the cellar of her leafy suberb house. A place for her teenage son and his friends to amuse themselves.

Sorry to comment on this subject before reading all 82 pages (so perhaps this has already been mentioned), but one thing I do remember hearing at some point back in the 70's is that even though Pete Best was thought to be a better drummer than Ringo in the beginning, Ringo was chosen because his goofy personality was thought to be a better fit with the John, Paul and George. So even if Pete was thought to be a better drummer, he couldn't have been *that* much better than Ringo if the final decision came down to whose personality meshed better with the rest of the band.

Listen to the demo of Love Me Do on the Anthology, you will hear all you need to know about why he was sacked. Very inconsistent drumming. Constantly changing the beat, ouch!

The "changing the beat" was an (unsuccessful) arrangement decision, not in of itself evidence of Pete's ability or lack thereof.

Not when hope springs eternal for some that Pete Best might not be that bad of a drummer.

Pete Best wasn't even the best drummer in The Pete Best Band.

I loved this - I don't know if this was pre-fame but she already had a great voice (and eyes to die for) and there are some nice chord changes going on here.

What's really strange is that he suggested it, and the others agreed to do it. Very surprising - and risky - given his tempo fluctuations on the Decca recordings.

Pre-fame, and limited release. One of my all-time favorites: clean, simple, unpretentious, direct.
