I"m just curious...is anyone else DISGUSTED by the WB TV network's horrific program...I beleive called "Superstar?" It's a totaly rip-off of Fox's American Idol, with (surprise, surprise) an obnoxious English guy/a cute girl/and a Black guy who looks like he calls every one "Dawg" as judges.
But the really disgusting thing is that it's all a fake. That's supposed to be hillarious to us.
I mean, as if a weekly dose of William Haung would be funny. I mean, come one, isn't once enough?
But it's so cruel. They out and out lie to these folks. It'd be one thing to have to tell them that they are not good singers the first time...and the sting comes, and they will eventually recover.
But to put them through it week after week, set them up, week after week, then reveal to them that the whole world is laughing at them.
    IT JUST SEEMS SO CRUEL.
Am I alone, or is this just really tasteless and mean?

It's apparently supposed to be a parody, but I fail to see the humor in it. I think American Idol is cruel enough, but this takes it to a whole new level. To pick the worst singers deliberately and then make them think they have actual talent is beyond cruel. Jeez, they even have a Ryan Seacrest lookalike/soundalike to make the whole thing one big ripoff.

    For shame!

This is nothing new? They've been copying programming since the 50's :D Hey, I only have 2.5 Channels! 7, 9, & half of FOX!...when I can pull a picture through the snow:laugh:

I read somewhere today that audiences were told that the contestants were part of the Make a Wish foundation. They were informed that the singers were terminally ill and wanted to perform for people before dying to try to convince the audience to cheer them on and not laugh.

I'll let you decide if that is in good taste or not...

    Shalom, y'all!

Sorry...I can't just let that one stand on it's own. If that's true----that is so friggin' devious that those guys outta go to jail---in Iraq. That's just down right evil :realmad:
How can they get away with such cruelty?????
I mean, it's hard enough to sing acappela in the first place; it's another thing for Simon to be so nasty...but to put the poor contestants (who are obviously oblivious to EVERYTHING) through this is just...I know it sounds corny...but it's just soooooooooooooo mean! :realmad: It's like Candid Camera in Hell.

This is sad, but I can't stop watching it. It's the old train wreck scenario. I guess the thing that amazes me the most is that these "contestants" actually believe that they have singing ability/talent only to be crushed at the end.

Yeah, yeah. You're right. But----------------like everyone else they have a dream...
(Geez, this looks woosy in print). I can quote you a very long list of very talented people who have screwed up singing auditions...who went on to be very big stars. It's a nerve-wracking expereince in the first place. And singing accapella doesn't prove anything. Very few good singers can do it! And just because they can doesn't mean they can actually sing well with a band. Take for instance that redheaded kid who sorta looked like Conan OBrien who made it to the finals of AI. He was off-key throughout ALL of Roger Miller's "King of the Road." And that's not a hard song to sing. There are only 3 or 5 notes in the whole song ( I think, from memory)...but I know you can almost talk through it. The guy made it to the finals of a legit show, and he still sang off-key with a band behind him. But my point is that no one was making an evil joke BEHIND his back. He knew he screwed up. He'll probably be back, more seasoned, more confident, and who knows>>>>BUT when the end comes for these poor guys and gals on the WB---yikes! They made need an entire crew of shrinks standing by! I mean, even some of the rejects on the Marry a Millionaire show needed therapy----I guess the point is American TV really has turned it into the the idiiot box and "the Vast Wasteland." What does that say about our culture? Personally, I think it's really sad. I heard on the news William Haung was booed out of a stadium for trying to sing "The Star Spangled Banner." (which is a really hard song for a good singer to belt). I guess at least sports fans are getting tired of this nonsense. The point is I just think this is the cruelest thing on television. And dave, that includes weekly televised train wrecks! :)

I tuned in in for a few minutes tonight, I did not do anything for me so I watched the made for TV Disney movie.
I did enjoy American Idol - that and 24 were my only regular shows I watched besides Jay if I am up.

It's nice to know that two of the four finalists are from Minnesota. I can't sing any better than the people on the show. I've caught this a couple times and thought it was hilarious. People with little talent and little sense to realize it. I thought Mario wasn't uniquely horrible and would have been gone last night. I do like how they mock American Idol's catch phrases - No One is Safe, You're a triple threat etc. I don't see this as much different than Joe Millionaire. If you are that desparate to be on TV, you have to realize these situations can occur. Caveat emptor.

I gotta believe there'll be some kind of surprise ending to this, where the joke will be on the viewing audience, otherwise it's all just too cruel. There is some precedent, like how they made "The Millionaire" a real millionaire.

It's hard to believe that WB would approve of such a show. Didn't one exec think, hmm this is kinda of a mean thing to do to people maybe it's not a good idea. I guess making money wins over doing the right thing.

I don't think this is any lower than other "garbage" on TV. TV has been trash for some time ex. Jenny Jones, Ricki Lake, Divorce Court, Falcon Crest, Fear Factor I could go on all day. I don't think this is trying to solve any of life's great challenges, but neither are 99% of the other shows.

:agree: I'm with you, there. I watch a couple of Nickelodeon programs with the kids (we're all Spongebob fanatics...we quote entire episodes  ), maybe occasionally catch an OLD TV show or movie or music special, and the NHL playoffs. Beyond that, I quit watching "da toob" way back when Max Headroom was cancelled. Oh, we did watch Star Trek: Next Gen reruns on the local independent channel...but otherwise, forget it. (This doesn't count DVDs or LDs I own.) I have ex-relatives who couldn't understand how I could go for days without turning a TV on.

All I can say about American Idol and its clone: I've never watched it, never will. Sounds like a warped idea of a talent show. Hell, bring back the Gong Show! THAT was some hilarious entertainment! :D

There you go!! At least people on that show got gonged right away. But to drag this out week after week...it's just EVIL!
And while watching Carrie again last night I finally figured out what really bugs me about "Superstar"---it's CARRIE!
I mean, didn't you really hate the "cool" kids for setting up poor Carrie that way! Weren't you glad when she "went to town" on them?
All I can say is: I really hope none of the Winners/Losers on that show have telekenetic powers---or we're all really screwed!
