I became aware of The Roches for the first time last Christmas. A priest whose comments I follow on Facebook did a video commentary on their version of "Good King Wenceslas", which is also on this album. An more obscure Christmas hymn, and just a beautiful version.

Not nearly as obscure as some mentions, but some of our favorites:
    The Roches
    John Fahey
Kenny Burrell - Little Drummer Boy
The Players (London street musicians with involvement of Andy Mackay if I remember correctly)
    Andrew Parrott / Taverner Consort

Ah, The Players! This album doesn't get enough luv around here, perhaps because it's so traditional and old-timey! Ariel Stream will be playing a lot from it, later in the season! Roches too! (Fahey, probably about 4 cuts...)

Now playing on http://www.arielstream.com/]Ariel Stream[/URL]: Bel Canto - Foolish Ship

Another favorite is Paddy Roberts, "Merry Christmas You Suckers." I don't think it has appeared on any CD yet. Check it out on Youtube:

This EP by The Springfields (including Dusty of course) is pretty cool. I don't think these tracks have been issued on CD yet. [IMG]

The Sonics - "Don't Believe In Christmas"

It's a speeded up version of Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business" with new lyrics.

Nancy LaMott's "Just In Time For Christmas"seems to leap out of the pack early and often.Besides the title song,"All Those Christmas Cliches"and Thad Jones' "A Child Is Born"(which by now is just under the radar as a standard).Recorded in 1994,Nancy left the world days before Christmas 1995 of uterine cancer.

The Fall have done some of my Favorite Xmas records: No Xmas For John Keys (2 versions, one on Witch Trials and another recorded for Peel) and Xmas With Simon. I haven't followed them for a number of years but still like them quite a bit. Where is Protein Christmas from?

Love the Cale. Quite nice actually.
