Now, it's Moon Safari, which I discovered later (circa 2003-4).

At the time, I was eating, sleeping and breathing ALL - Mass Nerder.

Beautifully haunting, like a ghost story told through music, though obviously fueled by troubled times. Gently hypnotic vocals that sometimes seem so fragile, yet possessing an underlying self assurance. Love the way she seamlessly weaves that line from "Amazing Grace" into her own "Metal Heart". Sounds like it was written for that song, especially when she delivers it with that dusky, forlorn voice...

I once was lost but now I'm found
Was blind but now I see you
    How selfish of you
To believe in the meaning of all the bad dreaming

Perfect for a dark, rainy day, even has the sound of thunder high overhead during one of my favorites, "Say". The vinyl sounds great, and like a lot of Matador stuff from that mid 90s vintage, quite a bit better than the CD, which is HDCD with PE enabled, but the original vinyl does have a little more magic.

In the Aeroplane over the sea is my all time favorite album. I really love Spoon’s Series of Sneaks too. Great year for indie rock. Did lonesome crowded west and keep it like a secret come out in 98?

  25. Hey Vinyl Man

Hey Vinyl Man Another bloody Yank down under...

Without even looking up exactly what else in my collection came out in 1998, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road and Mermaid Avenue come immediately to mind. They're two of my favorites of the entire decade. (Incidentally, I was at a record shop today and the secondhand CD bin had four copies of Car Wheels...I'm still wondering how it is that brilliant album found its way into that many collections where it wasn't appreciated!)
