    Here is my top 10:

1-4: Beggars Banquet / Let It Bleed / Sticky Fingers / Exile On Main
    Street.

-Ask me on a monday, and my favourite may be Beggars Banquet. Then ask me on a saturday, and it may have changed completely to maybe Exile On Main Street or Sticky Fingers or Let It Bleed. The four masterpieces each has their own aura and does connect together in a bond. Can't choose. These albums are so perfect in every possible way.

    5: The Rolling Stones (UK)
-The debut album. Where it all started, and in some ways it still has to be beaten by them. This is where Brian Jones had his say, with his slide and harmonica and where Keith was during his Chuck Berry in a teenage-way. It doesn't get any better than that.

    6: Their Satanic Majesties Request
-I know that for a certain type of fans, this album is the black sheep. And thank goodness for that! Totally over the top psychedelia with Keith riff's! Yes!

    7: Between The Buttons
-A pretty uneven record. And that's what I like about it. It's all over the place and just sounds SO sixties!

    8: Aftermath (UK)
-My least favourite of the 1966-1967 period. But the high's are higher than the high's on Buttons and Satanic. Under My Thumb is perfection!

    9: Some Girls
-I have never warmed to Side 1. Too many songs sounding alike. But Side 2 may be among the strongest album sides ever, by a band.

10: Goats Head Soup OR Tattoo You
-Both albums are runners-up here. They have high's and low's, but the aura and the strong songs, makes both records worthwhile.

(11: Voodoo Lounge. -My personal favourite of the latter years. Strong songs all over, though it has dated a little, and the record would have benefitted for being shorter. 15 songs are too much.)

I agree John. I like them both, but not as much as their earlier albums. While they each have a handful of very good songs (or in the case of Satanic, a couple of great songs), they both have an almost equal amount of very average to poor songs.

You've summed the big 4 up perfectly MHP. Well said.
You could probably say exactly the same for the followup, No.2 as well. I actually like the follow up even better (except for the dreadful "Under The Boardwalk").

True but 8 of the 14 tracks are studio tracks so more than half are studio tracks.

Thank you. The reason why 'No. 2' doesn't stand as strong for me, is it's consistency. It's obviously recorded at different locations, as all early Stones albums, and sounds more like a sampler of different sessions, though several songs are really great. Also, 'Under The Boardwalk' is not the only weak track, IMO. I don't think 'What A Shame' and 'Grown Up Wrong' does anything good, either. They are pastiches of the blues, but there isn't much of 'songs' in them. Great album, though.

I know. But isn't it what the band call it, themselves?

It's more like rerecordings of previously issued tracks except for the 2 new covers.

True. A real oddity in their canon. Still, considering the ethics behind the whole record, it IS a live album.
Mick Jagger clearly states the album as 'live' in the Stripped documentary.

    It's really a misnomer.

Goats Head Soup and December's Children. On the former it's Exile with a hangover. I didn't like it at first, but there are some beautiful melodies on it. The latter is the one album I recommend if somebody wants just one Stones album. And the one track that I think epitomizes the band is the live version of "Route 66" that closes side one of the American release.[IMG]

No. I don't mind "What A Shame", but "Grown Up Wrong" isn't much I guess. But "Under The Boardwalk" is just plain awful.

All the love? I thought most fans considered them failures (specially Satanic Majesties).

Not according to the vote here. They both currently have more votes than Out Of Our Heads and Tattoo You for example which most critics like better.

The cd version with bonus tracks is even better.

Songs that are on the 2007 collection but were not on the 1975 collection are:

    1. "Tell Me"
    2. "Heart of Stone"
    3. "Play with Fire"
    4. "I'm Free"
    5. "Mother's Little Helper"
    6. "Dandelion"
    7. "2000 Light Years from Home"
    8. "No Expectations"
    9. "Let It Bleed"
    10. "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
    11. "Brown Sugar"
    12. "Wild Horses"

    1. Let It Bleed
    2. Black & Blue
    3. Aftermath (UK version)
    4. Emotional Rescue
    5. Goat's Head Soup (my first ever Stones purchase)

Plus an honorable mentions for a home-made compilation of Between the Buttons/Flowers.

All of which, I thought, would be a fairly standard selection of everyone's faves until I saw the percentages-so-far. Oh well....

And I'll vouch for that. There is a lot of love for Satanic Majesties on this forum. Although I do love the two hits (Rainbow and 2000 Light Years), I don't get the love either. And I otherwise love psychedelic-era Stones.
