On the recent Elvis remasterings from RCA it says: Original Source Tapes Mastered Using DSD Technology What is a source tape compared to a master tape? Thanks. Thom
Personally, I think it is a case by case basis. I recall when I bought the "Secret Love" CD collectioon from SESSIONS...it said, "Mastered from the original studio tapes for the best sound..." Well that could be 15th generation tapes the studio had lying around that they sent. That's why I prefer it when Steve's stuff says: Mastered from the original mix-down tapes. That means the original tape they mixed down from 4, 8, 16, 24, etc. down to 2 and that's the tape I want put on CD.
There seems to be a question about this over at the Elvis For CD Collectors forum. Some are saying that a source tape can mean any generation of a tape. However, since RCA has unearthed most of the original Elvis master tapes, why would they use anything BUT these when transferring to DSD. They have done some stupid things in the past but to not use these would be just insane! Thom
