And pretty much everything else they did... although some songs were ballads.

Was Ben Curtis the name of the guy, who left the band, then joined School of Seven Bells, then tragically passed away a few years ago? I loved the first Secret Machines album- one of my Top 10 between 2000-2010. I need to go back and spend more time with their 2nd & 3rd albums. Do you know if any of the other original members(beyond Curtis) have put out music under their own individual names or within another band the past 8 years? I do still need to buy all the School of Seven Bells albums eventually.

Yeah, that was him (he was the guitarist in Secret Machines, and his brother Brandon was the vocalist/bassist). I haven't really followed the careers of Brandon Curtis or the drummer (Josh Garza), so I'm not sure if they're in new bands. As for School Of Seven Bells, I really like them. I'm a sucker for lush female vocals and dreamy textures, so "Half Asleep" is my favourite song of theirs (from their 2008 album Alpinisms):

I just remembered the 2010 album Gemini by Wild Nothing (the project of a guy named Jack Tatum, from Virginia). It has a few brilliant tracks (namely "Live In Dreams", "Chinatown" and "Summer Holiday"), but it's a solid indie rock album, and you can tell Tatum loves 1980s UK dream pop. This is a live performance of "Summer Holiday" on KEXP:

And I can't believe I'm the first person to mention the National. They have a series of brilliant indie rock albums, peaking in 2010 with High Violet (in my opinion). "Bloodbuzz Ohio" from that album:

Oh yeah, Howling Bells. I haven't listened to them in ages. I remember "Low Happening" was used in an episode on The OC, in 2004 or 2005. I looked it up afterwards, and that was how I found out about them (and a lot of indie bands, if I'm being totally honest). :o That's still a great song...

I think Howling Bells are from Australia, so from your part of the world, although they might have been living in England since their debut album. I still need to buy their last 2 albums, as Amazon Reviews although not a lot of them, seemed to be good. I just remembered that I need to add Goldfrapp and a few others to my list.

Norway's Kvelertak -Best rock band in years, but now relegated to the Metal dustbin, seeing as how no-one outside of that demographic seems to listen to hard rock anymore.

I think of it as post-rock for some reason. Arcade Fire's "Funeral" was a great debut album and easy to remember. Brian Setzer's "Ignition" is a great rock & roll album.

Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Tool, and Katatonia all released some great albums in the 2000s. Some other bands I would like to mention are: Mastodon, Hellyeah, Down, Ringworm, Superjoint Ritual, High On Fire, and Motley Crue. There are plenty of others I just can't think of them at the moment.

Some great call outs here but I'd have to add Rammstein to the list with 'Mutter' being their first post 2000 release and all their subsequent studio releases.

Alter Bridge and Avenged 7x are also great.

My 21 year old son announced to me on the weekend

'Ive just started listening to Led Zeppelin. I didnt realise they were so good'.

So really there is very little need for 21st century music. The cool kids listen to classic rock.
