I picked up the new "Special Collector's Edition" and it looks very good. Not to say that the original disc wasn't.

When I was a kid I read the book "633 Squadron" which was even better than the film. It was so long ago that its connection to "Star Wars" never occurred to me. Thanks for the connection.

"The Diary of Anne Franke", while not a war movie in terms of combat depictions, also brought WWII home to me as a kid. Those two-tone sirens gave me shivers every time.

I love war movies. "Platoon" and "Midway" are a couple of my favorites.

The 2013 DVD/BR release from Severin restores the film to its proper 2.35:1 aspect ratio (the only prior DVD edition was the 2005 Tango release which cropped the film to about 1.74:1). Time to upgrade! :)

Another difference on the Severin disc of Zulu Dawn is the running time... the old Tango DVD was 112 minutes, whereas the Severin disc is 117 minutes. Since there's no "director's cut" or "extended cut" of the movie (at least not that I'm aware of), I'm assuming the difference is due to frame rate or transfer speed... anyone know?

This has been a frustrating thread to read through as so many of my favorites have already been mentioned, and every time I thought I had one that had not yet been, there it was in the very next post !

So, hopefully, this one has not yet been included :

    Command Decision (1948) Clark Gable.

This one was kind of overshadowed by 12 O'Clock High as it is also a WWII film about a Bomber Squad Commander in the European Theater dealing with the pressures of command. I saw it years ago and thought it was pretty good.

    Run Silent Run Deep (1958)

Another WWII submarine move starring Clark Gable.

I think that Command Decision is too much about command for some folks.... They wanna see bombs, 50 calibers blazing, crashes, blood, and death galore in a two hour packet... ;) I like it too. :agree:

    The Pacific.
At first I didn't care for it as much as Band of Brothers, but after watching it a second time I think I like it more.
Paths of Glory and the Thin Red Line are outstanding as well.

    Kenneth Branagh's "Henry V".

It's a shame that Robert Duvall didn't play Robert E Lee in "Gettysburg" as he did in "Gods and Generals"

It's not strictly a movie but the two part episode "Hills are for Heroes" from the "Combat" tv series makes a helluva war movie.

:agree: I thought Martin Sheen was purr-dy good till I saw Duvall deliver his acceptance speech to the Virgina Assembly in Gods And Generals! Duvall is actually a relative of Robert E. Lee. That address to the Virginia Assembly came right from the actual records. He had me half-way through that speech. I knew he was the Lee of Lees.

  16. On that subject....

I had one course that showed Crimson Tide in order to compare/contrast different styles of Command. Enjoyable "War" flick, but not a favorite.

"The Dirty Dozen" (first film) remains my favorite war movie, mostly because it features an all-star cast with Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Sutherland, Trini Lopez, George Kennedy, John Cassavetes and Telly Savalas. The Dirty Dozen sequels were made for television, but did not live up to the quality of the original.

Enjoyable: The Great Escape. What can you say about that cast? Of course there is the matter of that ending...

Laudable: Schindler's List is a flawlessly made film.

Loveable: George C. Scott and Patton. He's as #@$%^ but I love him for being a %^&!.

Immersive: Apocalypse Now. The mission to end all missions. I don't know why Coppola fretted so much. Seems like the perfect ending to me.

And...even though it is not out yet, as a longtime aviation buff, I am really looking forward to the upcoming series The Mighty Eighth...
