DCC Archive What prices do you see on DCC gold CDs in your local record stores?

Hi,

I found The Eagles Greatest Hits at $25 and Elton John's Greatest Hits at $26, but most others are $31, and Queen's Night at the Opera is $33. I'm sorry I didn't start collecting these a couple of years ago when they were around $22 at Circuit City.

Online, I see that CD Now usually have DCC golds around $27, although they do have the two Bonnie Rait's on special at the moment at $25. I don't find buying online as much fun as walking out of the store with goodies, although I did get the MCA Who's Next from HMV Canada for the princely sum of $CA 7.

The second-hand prices around here are about $20.

I'd be interested in knowing what sort of prices you guys are seeing.

Here in Volcania, we do have a Circuit City. I'll have to check that out. (crosses heart)

 

This weekend I tripped across the fact that Peaches seems to be kaput. The two locations I go to, one in Ft Lauderdale, one in Boca Raton, are now just empty stores. A bit of a shock. This was my favorite bricks & mortar.

I had thought Blockbuster Music might be an alternative, but I must have been snoozing, can't find hide nor hair of them, either.

That leaves Sam Goody and Circuit City. My expectations for finding gold in those parts are extremely low. I am resigned to cyber prospecting for any future gold.

Is this a Florida-only chain? I drove by one in Orlando back in July, but it too was closed.

 

The Wherehouse stores by my home have had tons of used MFSL discs over the years, and for a long time they were pretty cheap. Two years after MFSL went out of business, they were still marked at $14.99! Exodus, Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, Allman Brothers Live At Fillmore East, Giant Steps, Songs For Swingin' Lovers, the Who's Tommy....I got all of them for $15. They always seem to have a lot by Rush, Eric Clapton's solo albums, and the Moody Blues, but no one seems to touch them. About a year ago, the prices shot up to a $30 minimum. That's still a decent price for a MFSL disc, though.

P.S. Don't get MFSL's Songs For Swingin' Lovers. Wasn't that impressed by the sonics compared to the UK box set, which supposedly used EMI's copies.

I saw "Pet Sounds" and "Spirit of America" by the Beach Boys the other day for $25.88

 

There used to be a record store called "Peaches" in Little Rock, Arkansas. It closed several years ago.

In Arkansas you can expect to pay anywhere from 24.99 to 34.99 for DCC gold discs when they can be found.

Circuit City used to have a separate section for Gold Cds, but they have pretty much stopped carrying them altogether. I picked up some CCR gold discs there for around 22.99-24.99.

There is one used record shop that still has a lot of DCC and quite a few MFSL discs, but his prices start at 20 bucks for used discs and goes as high as 60 bucks for some sealed items. Can't say that I blame him. I picked up a Best of the Doobies there sealed for 25.00 about two months ago.

About 5 or 6 years ago, when DCC's Gold reissues were in full swing, I was able to find a s***load of them over at a local Costco for only $19.00! Ahhhh...those were the days!

 

I discovered (by accident) that I had a "bricks and mortar" copy of Musicforasong.com within an hour's drive from me last Saturday night. They had a pretty good selection of DCC and MFSL titles with everything (IIRC) $25 or less. I walked out of there with the following:

Chet Baker in NY - $9.99
Miles Davis - Musings - $9.99
Bernard Herrmann - Great Film Music - $14.99
Miles Davis Quintet - $4.99

...and to start adding to my "Complete Steve" collection: "Reelin' in the Years Vol. 3" - $4.99 and "Rock the First - Vol. 4" - $6.99

 

Thanks Dave, I knew about Griffco but I hadn't heard about Better Records, I'll check them out.

Random notes: Peaches is/was a SE chain, they still have a website showing locations.

I've seen CD Warehouse stores, nothing called Wherehouse. I think there are many in the SE Florida area, but they are a CD exchange type outfit, small inventory and buying your used CD's for up to $5.

 

I think most/all of the Peaches stores closed down. Here in Tampa, Blockbuster Music became CD Wherehouse...and last time I went they were changing to Turtles, which was here before...part of the Turtles/Tracks/Record Bar chain. It's getting hard to keep up with all these retail store changes!

 

Depends here (central CT). I just bought "Eagles Greatest Hits" at Borders for $30. That's in the nominal range these parts.

 

Regarding Borders. I saw the Everly Brothers today for $29.99, Queensryche too.
