    Can someone help me? My father was driving to Montreal from Toronto where they have an oldies station that was playing a record my father said sounded very much like Neil Diamond's Play Me. The tune, he said, sounded like "You are the sun/I am the moon/You are the words/I am the tune" The only words he could remember were instead of when Neil sings the words Play me, this singer sang "On the outside". I know that's very little to go on but I hope someone can help as it's been on my father's mind and he'd like to know.

    Just a guess, could it have been Little Anthony and the Imperials, On the Outside Looking In? That's the only song with those words that rings a bell.

    Dave, thanks but that's not it. My father says for sure it was some 'white guy'.

    The one that comes to my mind is "Reaching For The Moon", an Irving Berlin tune from "Moonlight Sinatra" that has possibly been covered by a lot of other singers:

    The moon and you appear to be
    So near and yet so far from me
    And here am I on a night in June
    Reaching for the moon and you,

    I wonder if we'll ever meet
    My song of love is incomplete
    I'm just the words, looking for the tune
    Reaching for the moon and you.

    <instrumental interlude>

    I'm just the words, looking for the tune
    Reaching for the moon and you.

    Mikey and Arne, thanks but no. It doesn't ring a bell with me either but it's been on his mind. He's the one who suggested I post the question here. Keep in mind it has a melody similar to Play Me.

    Could it be "Crossroads" by Don McLean?
    Kind of the same tune and has the lyrics "on the outside"

    Jimmy, that's a great record but not the one. Thanks for the response. It's got my father to the point where he's gonna call the station and ask for their playlist of that time-slot.
