Good question. Jason Isbell's 2017 release, Nashville, is that album for me right now, but it remains to be seen if I will still feel that way down the road.
I'd be surprised if there aren't some truly great recently released albums that I haven't even heard.
I think freeing herself from the concept album and getting it all in at under 50 minutes worked wonders for her. I loved her previous two LP's, but there was a fair amount of bloat on both. I saw her in 2013 and last month, and I will say the more synth/electronica based sound of some of the new stuff meant the show relied more on sequences and tracks and felt a little less 'live' than the previous outing, which had much more of a live band feel. Still an amazing show, but as far as how she 'pulled it off live,' like most modern pop, it wasn't all actually done live. But the thing about her is I fully believe her next album will be something completely different from this one, which was different than Electric Lady. What an amazing talent.
I'll go with two: Tash Sultana's `Flow State' and `True Meanings' by Paul Weller. Both from this year.
Yep. Proof that good music is not dead--great music. It isn't just on major labels anymore..small label indies rule. "Last truly great album" is in the ear of the beholder for sure. The 2018 debut of I'm With Her is fantastic (Sarah Jarosz, Sara Watkins & Aoife O'Doonovan)
Well im still two years behind ... as always But in 2016 we had Bowie blackstar Nick cave skeleton tree Leonard cohen you want it darker Devin townsend transcendent They are all truly great albums in my opinion.
My kids love Tash; i only have one EP of hers. Time for me to add her to my Christmas list. Do you have the cd or LP?
still missing anyway I was blasting Purling Hiss' High Bias (2016) on my way home late last night, and it was truly great. No exaggeration.
Probably Wish You Were Here (1975). It's an outlier, though; I haven't got a single album past 1971 in my collection.
