What's up with Sony releasing Janis Joplin (BBAHC) on DVD-A and not SACD?

Doesn't Sony still have the rights to Janis Joplin's catalog?

Based on most of their efforts to push SACD...this is probably their latest marketing strategy (sarcasm intended)...

If you are referring to the article in ICE magazine indicating this, I think whoever wrote that article was mis-informed.

Cheap Thrills has been on Sony's upcoming MCH SACD list for quite some time, and it would seem that a bit of misinformation is being handed to us.

I would be very surprised if the album were to come out on DVD-A. I am near 100% sure that when it comes out it will be on SACD.

I know in the ICE article, the 5.1 re-mix producer indicated this album and Neil Young's Harvest are due on DVD-A. Maybe he just assumed since he was doing a 5.1 re-mix, and all his re-mixes so far have been done for DVD-A, that the Joplin was coming out on DVD-A.

I guess we will know the true story when, and if, the discs hit the shelves.

I got the new ICE yesterday and was wondering about that, too. But, since ICE generally behaves as though SACD doesn't exist, I'd guess they simply assumed that if it was a 5.1 mix it was coming out on DVD-A.

Since BMG just signed on to make SACDs, I'd expect some new rumblings from that camp soon. It certainly seems premature for Sony to throw in the towel and make DVD-As.

Do you know some artists who are under BMG Ryan?

Confusion regarding the competing formats -- so what's new?

I think I can clear things up a bit. In several recent interviews, engineer/producer Elliot Mazer has discussed projects he's been working on. Neil Young enlisted him to do a surround sound DVD-A version of "Harvest"; a natural choice since Mr. Mazer had recorded the original version. ( He will also be helping Mr. Young with a DVD-A version of "After The Gold Rush". ) Sony asked him to do a multi-channel SACD version of Janis Joplin's "Cheap Thrills", another album he originally worked on. In print Mr. Mazer has enthusiastically extolled the virtues of both the DVD-A and SACD formats. With these two upcoming releases, the listener can judge and compare the results.

Although I don't have any links to give right now, it has long been stated by Sony that they would be releasing ten or so DVD-As. I don't remember too many titles, but I know that Bat Out of Hell was one of them.

The BMG announcement should be taken with a grain of salt - a friend of mine, who has a fairly large say in what goes on reissue wise, says things there are tenuous at best both in the states and abroad regarding anything these days. Believe it when you see it is the line he used.

Neil will be releasing his catalog on DVD-A; however, the vast majority of the tracks will be in stereo, not multi-channel. The orchestral songs will be multi-channel, though.

Elliot Mazer remixed all the tracks of "Harvest" in the multi-channel format. He discussed the process at some length in a recent issue of Listener magazine

Not true, for Harvest, at least. And on that one , the only surround track that will have a 'standard' presentation (e.g., 'proscenium' mix, with the performance only in front of you) will be 'Needle and the Damage Done'. All the other remixed tracks will sound...surround, according to ICE.

I sure hope that they do a much better job on this one as the Gold cd Mastersound edition is just bloody horrible. Ear bleeder to the max!

The track "Heart of Gold" is out already on a sampler DVD-A. It is definately surround, but it "listens" weird, as the vocals are in the rear and the instruments are in the front.

I will have to re-listen to verify, but I remember that it sounded "backwards".
(I'm, speaking of the DVD-A track)

    Jon,

I think you're absolutely right, as someone posted that track in converted DTS on Usenet months ago. Sounds weird, but good.

How's Tab doing? Is he back from surgery or just going into it? Poor devil.

Yes. Cheap Thrills has been on Sony's Upcoming Multichannel SACDs list for some time.

So expect it to appear later in the year as a Multichannel SACD, not a DVD-A.

    Hey Scott!

Yes, he's back, but he is a hurtin' bro! He reports that he'll be fine, though.

The SACD of Bat Out Of Hell wasn't received to well either.

Is there any timetable for the release of Neil Young's material? Also, will there be hi-rez stereo tracks on these DVD-A's? Please post any informational links if there is any. Thanks.
