The Monkees sound a lot like a cheesier version of the Beatles.

Agreed, but IMO they sound like a blend between U2 and mid-90’s Radiohead.

First time I heard T.S. sing I thought "Man, this is some groovy Motörhead."

Don't be discouraged, you're spot on. I'd even go as far as adding Styx and REO to the group. In fact, I'd be willing to bet its the same 4 or 5 dudes in every one of those groups! :p

Has anyone else noticed that in many cases bands that sound alike are on the same record label? Chicago and BS&T on Columbia, Coasters and Drifters on Atlantic/Atco for example.

I constantly get Steel Pulse and Third World mixed up. Along with Aswad and UB40, they are the stalwarts of used reggae vinyl sections in the UK (unless they're specialist).

You've never heard a single Monkees song.

Yeah dude. James Burton's country licks sound like a spot on Harrison and Nesmith's Texas drawl is practically Liverpudllian.

Every Savoy Brown album from the first one through Street Corner Talking (that’s their first 6 albums) has keyboards credited. Savoy Brown was often jazz influenced as well...probably more so than TYA IMO.

Coldplay and this band, who were quite popular for a time....
