    Lennon was an incredibly soulful singer, particularly around '62-'64. His voice had the strength, the grit, and that hurt.

    Unlike most white soul singers, he was influenced by - but didn't exactly copy - what the black soul singers were doing, and that made his expression more powerful

    A lot of the choices on here are way too rock oriented (but, I will agree that Elvis singing 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' is white soul if anything is).

    Anyway, I can't believe that no one has mentioned Linda Lyndell yet:

    In addition to recording a handful of fantastic sides of her own, Jeannie was one of the three girls brought in by Felton Jarvis to sing backup on From Elvis In Memphis.
