Bob Dylan & Lou Reed are great vocalists also - not technically great, but great nonetheless...

    Can't just pick one.

    Sinatra
    Sandy Denny
    Annie Lennox
    Tony Bennett
    Robin Zander

As dumangl posted earlier, it depends on my mood.

A single singer? for all styles, living or dead, any language? no can do. I'm too old and have heard too much
    great stuff (lucky me). :)
Of current singers that are currently doing great work I'd like to make special mention of Youssou N'Dour.

    Ok, there is another:

The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me

I'd have to go for Allan Clarke, fantastic rock singer with a great range. He very rarely over did it and sounded Vegas-y and never went Whithney Houston either. I think he had an unusual voice in that it was a pure rock voice, he didn't have soul at all really (I don't mean that in a bad way).

I'd also pip for Gary Brooker, I just love his soulful, grizzled voice. I even love the way he talks!

Ok. last post I picked a single nominee for a current singer (Youssou N'dour)
But I may actually have a real answer to your question.
After all you didn't say "best," which is both meaningless and silly,
you said "favorite" which, if you've got the will to be honest, is always answerable, although the answer may
change from month to month (week to week?).
    So.... here goes.
at the moment, my very favorite singer is ............. Marta Sebestyen.
There have been a number of best-ofs that came out in the nineties and they all suck for a variety of reasons.
But I heard a few tracks of hers that effected me so strongly that I got on a plane and flew to
Budapest so I could hear her some more! (Imagine my chagrin when I found out she and her colleagues in
Muzsikas had been performing in nearby Berkeley on a regular basis for years prior to my getting hip to her!!!)
Right now that stuff from the eighties in particular means more to me than just about any other sung music.
Not a particularly beautiful voice, but a great great singer, at her best she digs deeper into songs than I thought possible.
deep deep meaning/feeling. Jeez! picking one singer was like sticking a pole up my ass but I'm glad I took the trouble.
If someone is curious, good examples of
what I'm talking about are on the compilation called Apocrypha (also good because the little booklet has complete lyrics
in both French and English (she sings in Hungarian)

Tom Jones - one of the best singers of all time - deep loud voice coming from the chest, wide dynamic and vocal range, etc.
Elvis Presley - same as above
John Lennon - Just love the unique sound of his voice.
Dennis Yost - love his throaty, resonant baritone voice
Colin Blunstone - same as above
Terry Kath - as much as I like his natural talent as guitarist, I also love the distinctive quality of his bluesy baritone voice.

Even though I don't listen to his work much these days, I'd have to go with Paul Rodgers.
