Yeah, I like David Lindley's slide a lot.

Jeremy Spencer might be worth a mention too.

Ry Cooder should also be on the list, too.

I never saw Earl Hooker live - I'm sure there are only a very few white people that did see him live - but I know what you mean. Had he not died so early I think he would have been used as a session player on many more albums & his talent would have been more widely heard.

I did see Hound Dog Taylor live - What an experience. I recommend you track down all 3 of his albums released by Alligator Records

I thought it was an old Hadicol bottle that started it for Duane...

I like Ry Cooder and Al "Blind Owl" Wilson. I also like Manny Charlton of Nazareth. When I was a kid I liked George Thorogood.

Oh wait, I put my glasses on. You didn't say gratingest.

    George (Harrison not Thorogood)

I like Robby Krieger's slide guitar work, laced in the songs with The Door's.

Taj Mahal's Statesboro Blues with Jesse Ed Davis started it for Duane Allman. Allman does an almost note for note copy.

Jesse Ed Davis isn't well known because
    1. Most people thought it was Taj Mahal that was playing the slide guitar.
    2. Most people thought the Duane Allman came up with the riff.

I like the aforementioned Zoot Horn Rollo but am especially fond of Jeff Cotton's otherworldly slide guitar work in 1968 with Captain Beefheart. Whether any of the people I picked are the best is up to the listener but I sure like them a lot.

I also love Elvin Bishop's slide especially since he plays in regular tuning... he purposely avoids open tuning in order to avoid sounding like Elmore James or the archetypes/pioneers (love Elmore by the way)...

Ry Cooder was gone by this time. Alex St. Clair and Jeff Cotton are doing the guitar duties here.
