Yeah, Mick Taylor was so much more. The Stones used him like a tool.

For my money, Hound Dog was the most badass slide player. Jesse Ed Davis was the most tasteful and note perfect. And Mike Campbell is one of the most underrated still doing it.

    I would say, in order:

    Ry Cooder
    Lowell George
    Bonnie Raitt
    Elmore James

Johnny from the list. As noted, many others not listed that belong. Saw Rory Gallagher at a small club in the mid 70's and he was smoking.

Jeremy Spencer of Fleetwood Mac should be in the poll. He mainly played Elmore James tunes, but I don't think anyone in the UK was close to his slide skills in 1967, not even Brian Jones.

Elmore James hands down. Duane Allman learned slide guitar by listening to Jesse Ed Davis.
Davis was an Elmore James fan.

He plays slide quite a bit, it's just not of the open tuning variety. Actually, I don't think any of the players listed above are close to him in the Electric department.

Most of the legends listed above play slide in open turnings and ride out the pentatonic scale (Duane was a mixolydian master). Beck is a completely different animal on slide. Not only does he play in standard tuning, which is more difficult, his technique is completely original. He doesn't limit himself to the blues box. I was surprised he was left off of the list.

I think its Duane, because he was the first guy that I realized played slide, and what it actually was.

I know others were doing it long before but it never hit home until I got Live at Fillmore East.

My second choice was Johnny Winter.

I was just searching through the thread to see if anyone mentioned those two. They're often overlooked, but they're two of the best.

Duane is the greatest but I voted for Elmore based on his influence. I would say Trucks is the greatest living slide guitarist and may have even surpassed Duane on technical ability!

Big shout out to Earl Hooker!!

I voted for Duane Allman, but the other guitarists throughout the band's history - Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are great too. For me Warren Haynes is the best who is still living and making music.
