Man, I wouldn't say Lemmy looks the part of a rock star!

Hendrix was more a musical supernova rather than rock star.

Brian Jones - although he missed out on the longevity aspect.

Me to. Jagger brings to mind a rooster strutting his stuff on stage.
I love Eno, but he's too composed, too cerebral to be rock star. Iggy Pop on the other hand....

Backstage with Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards looked like an underling, and even went so far as to ask Jimi about the girlfriend he stole from Keith.

David Bowie, one of the most glamorous and elegant rock stars in the world, wrote his song, Ziggy Stardust about Jimi Hendrix who "played it left hand" and had, "animal grace."

Watching Jimi for the first time in London, Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend both cried and held hands after the show, so traumatized were they by Jimi's talent.

Jimi Hendrix is the quintessential rock star. He would blow Bowie and The Stones and Led Zeppelin off the stage with one singing wail of his Olympic White Stratocaster. lean legs, and purple scarf.

Man, it's really hard to find someone who checks off every rockstar box (talent, charisma, mystique, excess, danger, disarray, fame, influence, iconicness, fashion flair, etc.). I think I'll have to go with:

About the only mark against him is the relative lack of flamboyance.

  16. Freddie Mercury is who first popped into my head, but it's probably Elvis.

Since the OP picked Hendrix, I suspect that "longevity" means "legendary/popular over a long period", not "lived a long time"...

I go with Hendrix for the following reasons:

    1. Defined the instrument
    2. Dressed and looked the part (wild hair, psychedelic clothing)
    3. Supremely popular
    4. Still a legend among new generations of fans
    5. Supremely talented
    6. Rock and roll casualty
