You know what I mean--the happy but sad, kind of rueful ending where things aren't neatly tied up, but it's not totally tragic either.
I'm thinking of Louis Malle's Atlantic City, also Once Upon a Time in the West.

    Yours?

Cannot recall one with specificity, usually the couple who belong and you'd like to see together, but they simply cannot be, a self-sacrifice realized.

"Angels With Dirty Faces". Rocky has redeemed himself ... perhaps the boys will be saved ... but the anti-hero is dead.

I'm sure I'll think of others but the one that comes to mind immediately is Lost in Translation ... I know, I know ... it's a love it or hate it kind of movie. I love it and nice but bittersweet ending.

It was weird seeing Max and Noodles meet again as old men and enemies. I didn't quite get DeNiro's big grin after taking a hit of opium and the credits rolling?

One of the best movies, nonetheless. :)

Yes! Recognizing the "sweet" part can be a function of how much you love movies. She lost a lot, but she still has Astaire and Rogers. Mia Farrow's wordless performance at the end is really moving.

This isn't that well-known, but the first thing I thought of was the ending to Where God Left His Shoes.
