Indeed a great score. However, sadly a very late Oscar given to Morricone by the Academy, for a score that clearly doesn't belong in the extensive league of his far better elaborated ones.

Collectibility- definitely an original Willy Wonka , an original MASH, the Goonies, Space Jam,or Pink Panther
song wise- hmm, Footloose, FM,Pulp Fiction, Realty Bites,Singles, The Color of Money,Stand By Me, American Graffiti
Musical- Blues Brothers, Lil Shop of Horrors, Rocky Horror Picture show, Popeye
Score- ET, Blade Runner, Chariots of Fire, The Omen, Vertigo,Psycho

im sure im leaving some out but soundtracks amass half my collection

Well, come to think of it, in my view not an award needed to elevate Morricone's work to a worldwide recognition as THE master on that regard.

I got lost in the world of this soundtrack.
MoFi (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab) is working on a restoration of this album from the master tapes, I understand.

Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye ridicules film noir, old Hollywood movies, private eyes and the influential author Raymond Chandler. It's a willful insult, but some people find it funny. I don't. Part of the joke is to play the theme song constantly throughout the film in different styles, both sung and as instrumental. The music and song are not in themselves satirical, but when played constantly in different ways they become part of the overall ridicule. Taken out of that context, the song and music are terrific and express the underlying intent of Chandler's novel. The theme song and music would serve well a straightforward remake of Leigh Brackett's serious script, which Altman gleefully mocks. My favorite of the various versions is sung by Clydie King. My least favorite is by Jack Sheldon.

What did you think of this compared to the earlier releases? I thought the sound was good, but it was virtually unlistenable because of the way it was organized.
