Ok, in my continuing series of threads looking for those little musical moments that make you smile - or make you think, "what the hell is that sound?" I give you the vibraslap. It is a percussion instrument that some say it sounds like a rattle snake. Maybe. You have all heard it. It's the sound you hear in the beginning of Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion. I'll go first. Love it's use on Elton's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Slap away!
Michael Nesmith & The First National Band - Magnetic South The transition from "Nine Times Blue" into "Little Red Rider".
John McCrea uses his to good effect in Cake's "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" (edit: Rooster beat me to the punch!)
Thanks, I always wondered what the heck that sound was. Mine's not really a 'song,' it's the Tan-Ya tanning butter radio spot from the late '60s, after the word 'Miami'.
I had to look this up on wiki since I never heard of it before. It mentions that The Lemon Pipers used it on "Green Tambourine" so I'll choose that song for now. They use it on "Blueberry Blue" as well. I like this neat little instrument. I always wondered how that sound was produced.
I went to the Rifflandia festival here in Victoria back in 2012, and Cake was one of the acts I didn't pay to see but stayed around to see anyway. I don't know Cake's music very well, but, judging by that show, 95% of their songs feature that goddamned thing! haha. I used to kind of enjoy that wonder of hearing "that thing that makes that rattlesnake-ish sound" in other artists tunes, but now (after being tortured by Cake that night) I hate the sound of that thing! hahahaa! ...and I can't think of any other artists that use(d) one that hasn't been mentioned. Guess my brain has burned that knowledge out of my head! LOL!
Since no one's mentioned it yet I'll add Jerry Garcia's vibraslap contribution during the percussion jam in "Alligator" from Anthem Of The Sun. And of course there was a song named for an alternate form of this instrument..."Donkey Jaw" from America's first album, featuring the very same Ray Cooper who would later play this and other percussion instruments with Elton John.
There's a nice on near the end of "Two Heads" by Jefferson Airplane. Comes out of nowhere, but it's perfect.
I was sitting here trying to picture what a vibraslap sounds like (without the aid of You Tube!) I've got some audio files of sound effects somewhere and there are a lot of variations of it, but I just couldn't place it. Reading the above, I knew immediately.
