Let's face it, either Pops and/or Miles are going to be on EVERY list, so let's just keep them out of the mix, m'kay? So, please, NO LOUIS ARMSTRONG and NO MILES DAVIS. Thanks!!

Here's mine, and I'll try and cite some specific favorite albums by each later tonight when I'm home and can review my collection. (I tried to keep it to five, I swear.)

    1. Woody Shaw
    2. Lee Morgan
    3. Charles Tolliver
    4. Eddie Henderson
5a. & 5b. Kenny Wheeler / Tomasz Stańko (similar kinds of players, I think)
    6. Don Cherry

I just got Larry Young's "Unity" album for the first-time ever, and have been digging Woody's playing and composing skills. He is one cool cat.

I here him in like every player since. I think he's the most influential musician of all time who is never called that. But more importantly I can't get enough of his tone and phrasing.

    2. Cootie Williams
I will involve Duke Ellington in every jazz thread!
He did that thing with the plunger mute that was like GRWWAHH...AHHH... and I love that.

    3. Art Farmer
Jazztet! Amazing partnership with Golson. So smooth and on point, always.

    4. Buck Clayton
Make that Basie band swing! The icing on that cake. Also arranger and general leader.

    5. Thad Jones
That Jones/Lewis Orch was maybe the last great huge commercially successful straight-up jazz band. I'm guessing, I dunno. Swung the hardest at any rate. Woo boy Jones bleeping and blooping that thing on top of all the groove. Also wrote some lovely tunes and was just totes cool.

Clifford Brown is my number one choice and stands above everyone else by some way.

After that it's the Blue Note chaps
    Lee Morgan
    Freddie Hubbard
    Kenny Dorham

    These three:

    Lee Morgan
    Freddie Hubbard
    Clifford Brown

after that, maybe some more recent guys could use a little love:
Roy Hargrove? Wynton Marsalis? Dave Douglas? Cuong Vu? Christian Scott? Ambrose Akinmusire?

Piano-led jazz is doing so well these days, artistically speaking, which is great. But I regret a little that it seems to overshadow trumpet-led jazz as much as it does.

Hard to argue with any of the names already mentioned, but I wanted to add one name that I have been listening to quite a bit as of late - Ruby Braff.

I'm pretty new here, and it's threads like this that give me ideas about new music to explore. As a budding fan of jazz, more than half of these names are new to me.
