I’m sure they could revitalise it. Probably a licensing thing.

No, i've heard the masters have been gone for a bit. Supposed 86 was the last aaa to vinyl cut, not sure. Mine sound as such.

Mofi can do wonders with basically nothing. They have to get their hands on some new artists that that complement their label, Nick Drake is one of them.

Bryter Layter is very poppy uplifting music ( almost).

You get a 24-bit download code with the LP reissues IIRC. It sounds no better than the Island Masters CDs IMO.

If the poster intends widening their fatwa against rich kids making music then some major gaps will start opening up in their record collection.

I know that Bernie wrote it, but it was Elton who sang it, so my comment stands. :)

They surely would've tried that but I believe from what I've read it is now unusable. The 'Bryter Layter' stereo master is missing is it not?

Was just wondering, are the multitracks for the three core albums still in existence?

    This post quotes John Wood from just before the boxed versions of the LPs started coming out;

"FIVE LEAVES LEFT : The original tape was unusable and although there were tape copies the best source was using a 24bit digital file made from the original tape when re-mastered for CD some 12 years ago.

BRYTER LAYTER : Unfortunately the original Masters have been lost so I used my personal copy made at the time of the original mixes.

PINK MOON : This was cut from the original Masters.

All three albums were mastered at Abbey Road Studios, July 2012.

I remembered correctly. So the remastered CD release for "Five Leaves Left" WAS from the original tape and 24-bit transfers were made at the time?

Wonder if it's possible to create a new stereo mix from the "Five Leaves Left" multitracks?

No demand for the sacds albums. I’m sure a limited run would sell.

John Wood found the master unusable when the last lot of reissues were cut in 2013. He thought the best alternative source was a hi-res digital transfer from early 00's. There is apparently an analogue copy tape as well.

Unusable can mean many things, there are many things baking a tape can not fix.

  21. The most recent LPs sound much better than Fruit Tree, irrespective of whether FT was cut AAA and some of the recent were cut from digital.

It proves the mastering is as important as the source and media.

Not heard the Fruit Tree versions but the Back to Black releases from 2014 sound excellent

As Kassonica said, there could be any number of reasons it is unusable, but it states nowhere that hadn't already tried to bake it, I'm certain if it had been an option it would've been tried. Perhaps even after baking it was well past the point of a good transfer being salvageable, and I don't know what the general consensus is, but the original 24-bit transfer has always sounded wonderful to me.

On the other hand, if the Bryter Layter stereo master turned up AND was found to be usable, I would definitely part with cash for a new remaster!

I’m only interested in Five Leaves Left but the tapes are 50 years old. What was the make of the tape EMI?
