Same here - I want the Psychedelic Sounds album and the Contact Records sessions discs - 10 discs is too much for my needs.

    You don't want Easter Everywhere?

Just heard the sampler. *Wow*...much better than what I was expecting, at least initially. The vocal-only YGMM is astonishing in its very existence.

Damn. I'm going to have to pre-order this.

I may have to spring for the Golden Dawn reissue if it is from a better source than what we have although my copy (which I grabbed off some blog) really isn't bad. I can't get enough of This Way Please.

Something I had missed from another forum:
Looks as if reissue of the stereo albums will have to wait.

Chris, where would I know of the Golden Dawn from?

Would love that, but the sampler is limited to 1000 x.

I saw that post on the other forum. I would think that at 10 CD's the box would cover mono/stereo for the first 2 albums.

I don't know much about Golden Dawn. George Kinny was the singer and I think he was friends with Roky. They put out one album on album on IA called Power Plant. It isn't all good but the 2 or 3 best songs are fantastic.

Perhaps there will be stereo/mono deluxe editions of the individual albums at some later date?

    Nope...

I picked up a copy of that when Charly dumped a load of those early, crappy IA 13th Floor cds and nothing on that set really caught my attention like You're Gonna Miss Me. Perhaps there's outtakes that might change my mind about that album.

Not Chris, but Golden Dawn's stuff is pretty trippy psych - the groovy cover seems to always show up in books about psychedelia.

Anything in stereo show up on that sampler? How's the alt of You're Gonna Miss Me compare to the released version?

The alt of YGMM seems to be the "standard" take 6 version, which (from my limited experience) has always seemed like the released version with extra yelps.

Is there any word of the individual albums being released separately at a later date? That's usually the way it goes with these expensive box sets, but then again, the Beatles Capitol Albums box sets are still the only way to get those remastered albums.

Odd hearing Roky and friend isolated from the music track - it's too bad there wasn't much of anything else they did that caught the odd power that YGMM did.

Got my pre-order Saturday with the deluxe versions of the Bubble Puppy and Golden Dawn albums and the Elevators sampler. All my fear and loathing about the International Artists catalog on CD is now a thing of the past. I will be signing up for the Elevators box (and maybe even the stand-alone albums when released).
    ELEVATORS SAMPLER:
Nice selection of tracks with quite a few unreleased songs and mixes. Sounded 100% tape
sourced with the Bynum sessions and BULL OF THE WOODS material sounding as good as they ever have been heard. The only "suspect" track was the mono LP version of "She Lives" which sounded like a fold-down of the stereo...but my experience with the original IA mono version of EASTER EVERYWHERE makes me believe it was already a fold-down to begin with. Other cuts had lots of dynamics with natural tape hiss and no NR evident.
By the way, the "You're Gonna Miss Me" (take 6) here is quite different that the mono "hit"
mix with more and different jug riffing, sloppier drumming, less and different lead guitar playing at the end and a sharper and more energetic vocal from Roky. The isolated vocal track presented really shows off Roky's mastery of the 1965 James Brown-style vocal attack.
    THE GOLDEN DAWN- "Power Plant"
My favorite IA album sounds as it was finally mastered from the mixdown tape or a good safety copy. Plenty of dynamic range and natural tape hiss with little or no NR evident (except possibly at the beginning of "Evolution"). Despite the naysayers here, this is every bit as good as EASTER EVERYWHERE and unlike the Elevators album it is composed of all original band-composed material. This is classic Texas psychedelic rock and an amazing feat for such a young band in mid-1967. For those who haven't heard it, they sound like a younger, more Brit-Invasionized version of the Elevators sound with no jug and more harmonica. Lead singer George Kinney was Roky Erickson's school friend and musical ally and they share the same South Austin-accented vocal style. The band hung out (and tripped) with the Elevators clique so the Tommy Hall philosophy is on full display in their lyrics as well. If you like EASTER EVERYWHERE, this is a must...it's MILES better than the crummy processed needle-drops of this material on the recent IA SINGLES box set.
THE BUBBLE PUPPY- "A Gathering Of Promises"
Again, this sounds like the LP mixdown master was used with little or no NR (except maybe on the bonus cuts which are the mono 45 mixes). I forgot how much I liked this album. It has aged better than many other releases of its day, including some of the better-known 'classic rock' staples. "Beginning" is still a classic Texas hard rock song to beat.
    Overall impressions:
This is a first-class series so far. The deluxe digi-pak versions of the stand-alone albums are well done with sharp artwork, informative liner notes booklets (2 per set) and great sound reproduction. The mastering is NOT brick-walled and they are not overly loud and bright...especially for current UK product. If you hated the sound of the recent Charly INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS SINGLES box set like I did, these discs will be 'a nice surprise.'

Is the alt. of You're Gonna Miss Me a stereo or mono mix?

  20. Vivaldinization

    Mono.

Some tracks on the sampler don't sound particularly tape-sourced to me. The mono single of "Reveberation" sounds like a needle-drop, as does "Tried to Hide." YGMM's isolated vocal also seems to have had a dollop of post-production reverb thrown on it.

At least some tracks on "Easter Everywhere" are dedicated mono mixes. "Levitation," for one, is missing the overdubs on the choruses that are on the single and stereo LP versions.

I don't think that Charly has the singles mixes for a number of songs (The Elevators and the other artists on the label). The Never Ever Land set of IA singles was a mostly crappy sounding compilation. At this point in time, given how the catalog was handled /mishandled over the years, anything being reissued from tape in regards to the IA catalog is a minor miracle.

    Tried to Hide

The "Tried To Hide" on the sampler is a little bit suspect, but it is not the same stereo remix as appeared on the Collectibles 3-CD Elevators set (that one was mixed from the 4-track). "Reverberation" sounds fine to me...if it's a needle-drop it's a damned good one. I have stone mint original stock and promo versions of that 45 and they don't sound as good as the sampler version. "She Lives" still sounds like crap though. But compared to the sonic garbage we have been given before by Charly, the sampler almost sounds like a MFSL disc.

    Thanks for your input.

Any more comparisons between the old 3 disc box & the sampler?
    BIG thanks.
