For me personally not just the best album of 1971, this is the best album ever.

It was indeed a great year and rock fans especially are spoilt for choice. As recommended already by other posters the David Hepworth book '1971 Never a Dull Moment' is a very good read.

Except... It is from 1972. "Wildlife" was their 1971 LP release (also on Atlantic).

    My selections:
    • Funkadelic - "Maggot Brain"
    • Ides Of March - "Common Bond"
    • Carole King - "Tapestry"
    • Bee Gees - "Trafalgar"
    • Traffic - "Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys"
    • Badfinger - "Straight Up"
    • Flamin' Groovies - "Teenage Head"
    • Booker T. & the MGs - "Melting Pot"
    • The Doors - "L. A. Woman"
    • Rod Stewart - "Every Picture Tells A Story"
    • Spencer Davis Group - "Funky"
I mention this Saturday morning from 0900-1200 hours [GMT-6], WXRT-FM 93.1 Chicago will feature songs from 1971 on "Saturday Morning Flashback". Tune in and hear how many selections from these albums are played.

There are quite a few more that could make this list, but this just shows, for me, what a ridiculously strong year 1971 was!

    No particular order:

Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
    Genesis - Nursery Crime
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame
    YES - Fragile
    Moving Gelatine Plates - S/T
    Magma - 1001 Centigrades
    ELP - Tarkus
Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda
    King Crimson - Islands
    Focus - Moving Waves
Il Balletto di Bronzo - YS (one of the best Italian prog albums, ever!)
Elliott Carter - String Quartet no. 3 (Pulitzer Prize winner)
    Morton Feldman – Rothko Chapel
Iannis Xenakis - Antikhthon, ballet for orchestra
    Frank Zappa - 200 Motels
    Orenette Coleman - Twins
Art Ensemble of Chicago - Phase One

I'll pick Alice Cooper - Love it to Death, followed closely by Killer. Other great releases:

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
    Deep Purple - Fireball
    The Who - Who's Next

The Beatles should have had a studio album in 1971. A case of “ what if”.
