poses an interesting question. If the veterans committee will only consider excellence and not popularity, will that block some worthy nominees with heavy fan support that are overdue? Maybe a reform should be a longer ballot, where voters pick from about 50 names instead of less than 20? The results can inform the decisions of the committee, who will be able to identify worthy acts that don’t have popular support. Induct those ones through committee, and free up more space on the ballot next year for new artists.
Apparently that "inside source" claims Stray Cats have a good shot at induction. If Stray Cats ever get inducted, I'll eat a bug.
Give fans this ballot. Let's see who they vote for. Boston Link Wray Tommy James & The Shondells Joe Cocker The Monkees Commodores New York Dolls King Crimson Jethro Tull Harry Nilsson Three Dog Night Peter Frampton Jim Croce Gram Parsons MC5 John Coltrane Mary Wells Dick Dale War Thin Lizzy Top 3 are inducted. Artists not chosen are still eligible for the main vote.
I wouldn't let most of these in so good thing it's just 3! On personal preference: The Monkees War Tommy James & The Shondells On my perceived importance/deservedness: New York Dolls John Coltrane War
There is a lot of negativity towards Madonna on this thread. How is she less deserving than, say, David Bowie, to whom she has had a very similar career in terms of adopting various music styles? And has been more popular. Both are deservedly in the Hall.
Boston, War and The Monkees get my vote. Thin Lizzy would have been there but I don't like voting for artists I doubt will make it in(It just kinda feels like a wasted vote). New York Dolls were also hard to leave off.
Like I said, I never seen an Alanis concert, much less one from the tour to support "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie", so I couldn't give you a time when Garbage opened for her... That said, the information I mentioned earlier comes from Wikipedia-The part about Liz Phair and/or Garbage opening for Alanis come from the "Promotion" part of the write-up, where it says "In January 1999, "The Junkie Tour" kicked off, and lasted through July, then returned in October up until the end of December. Opening acts included Garbage and Liz Phair, among others." I suppose it could be that Garbage opened for her during the international leg of the tour, not the North American leg? Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie - Wikipedia
If only choosing 3..............MC5, New York Dolls, and Link Wray. (I do like a lot of others on this list). ............and John Coltrane for influence.
Helluva list! All of these would get my vote. Even those I’m not particularly huge fans of deserve in, I would say.
It's really rather strange how rarely you hear Checkers' name these days... Chubby Checker - The Official Site
And just because "something sells by the boxcar load" doesn't mean that "it's automatically rock and roll."
The ACTUAL 'secret' to getting in: marketing by both "fans and management." If you ain't got those, you ain't getting in, no matter WHAT you did, and how many years before anyone else that you did it.
FWIW, I wasn't challenging your response - I was just curious. Garbage has opened for lots of acts over the years, so it wouldn't surprise me if they opened for Alanis back then...
Popular and pure rock n roll. Still active members. Kinda perfect to go in to me. Not obscure. Still relevant. But who knows. Maybe after all the members die. Which is a bummer. People should get that gift while they are still here. Recognition for your labor rarely comes to anyone. Put em in while they are still here. The Stray Cats give that original spirit and soul to the hall. No controversy and people know their music. A win. Put em in
Rock and roll elements are in pretty much every modern song. You would have a serious problem finding 1 modern song that isn't somewhat rock and roll. Rock was so big it influenced everyone even the artists that sound the furthest away from it. I also have to note that this quote tree began with a list of artists helped by this years inductees on page 47.
I wish they could find a way to let the fans vote for about 5 acts a year and have something like baseball's Veteran's Committee vote for 5 more.
