I thought McCartney's voice started to go around 1989. Hence, I'm not a big fan of his work after that date. I do like 'Jenny Wren' (2005).
A truly fine song. Given it's style and feel, it might be the only one in the 21st century batch that can truly compete with a classic '60s/'70s sound.
Conventional wisdom and decades of adoration have made me think this for years too. But man the more I listen to these 4 tracks, they are blisteringly good. Better IMO than a few on your list here. Namely My Love, Junior's Farm and Let 'Em In. “Fine Line”, “Ever Present Past” and “Find My Way” have the perfect combination of craft, artistry and commercial instinct too. Don't oversell the nostalgia.
Favorite MacCa singles of mine from this century: From A Lover To A Friend Fine Line Ever Present Past Sing The Changes (I Want To) Come Home New Queenie Eye I Don't Know Home Tonight Women And Wives
Sort of surprised how much consensus I'm seeing here -- a little unusual for a discussion of McCartney favourites!
Those listed don’t come close to Maybe I’m Amazed, Too Many People, Another Day or Band on the Run, so no. I do like I Don’t Know which is probably my favorite latter day Mac tune and I like Fine Line and a lot of others off of Chaos ( At The Mercy). I really don’t like Find My Way or much of anything off of Mac 3.
My apologies. [Serves me right for rushing a post when I was in a hurry to do something else.] The OP initiated a discussion of the quality of PM's 21st Century singles in comparison to his singles in the '79s, '80s and '90s - not just that of the singles released in the 2000s alone.
This is extremely subjective. "Maybe I'm Amazed", for example, never did a thing for me. Give me anything on "McCartney III" any day (except "Deep Down", can't stand that one).
Fine line is ok, but not the best choice for the single, that should have been THIS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. The other three I don't like at all! I'll say it, in recent years McCartney has been terrible at picking his singles. He seems to always choose the wrong song. TO ME, from New - I CAN BET should have been the single. from Egypt Station - NOTHING FOR FREE from Memory Almost Full - ONLY MAMA KNOWS or SEE YOUR SUNSHINE Even going back further from Press To Play - STRANGLEHOLD should have been the single He's even done this with videos, he gets all those blues guys together but he doesn't do the blues song?! The song he did was totally the wrong one. That was the perfect opportunity for him to do the song GET ME OUT OF HERE. His choices have been very puzzling at times.
You're right it is extremely subjective. Give me absolutely nothing from McCartney III and I do mean nothing! The one song I do like from that album isn't good enough to be a single.
True, very subjective but looking at chord structure and composition, his new stuff just didn’t do it for me. I don’t know, maybe it’s his voice that is off-putting to me. In his prime, his voice could literally bring tears to my eyes. I only listened to Mac 111 one time though so maybe I should give it another try. I did enjoy about half of Egypt Station.
"Promise To You, Girl," despite who it was for. Also really like "I Don't Know." "Fuh You" is complete garbage. He's capable of a miss from time to time.
Agreed. From the first time I ever heard My Valentine on the radio, I thought it was a gorgeous song, amongst his very best.
Again, from the first time I heard Jenny Wren, I thought it was a beautiful song & as good as anything Paul has ever written. He’s definitely produced some career-high material in the 21st century.
Fuh me, I can't go past Alligator from the New album. Classic Macca with great melodic changes and a wonderful voice. Nothing For Free is also a wonderful song. Along with Home Tonight, they are two great additions to his vast catalogue. I also love In The Blink Of An Eye. There are so many great songs.
