Just gave the sale it's own thread.

I got Do The Right Thing, A Face In The Crowd, and Klute, a blind buy that I've waited since 1971 for. I was 13 then, but remember my mother, and step-father being upset over it's "adult" themes. They might've even walked out of it for all I know, they did that a lot.

Brazil - the Box Set or the single DVD?
I have the box, it was one of my first titles of the Criterion Collection.

I didn't know that Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive had been released by the Criterion Collection. I have both on DVD. I'd say "Blue Velvet" is my favourite Lynch with Mullholland Drive a very close second place.

All of the features and cuts that are on the Brazil DVD box set are on the blu-ray version which is what I have now. That DVD set was the crown jewel of DVDs before BD and UHD came out.

Yes, you're right. Back then one of the best DVD sets.
I totally forgot about BD and UHD! There's plenty of space now on BD. I haven't really started collecting BD because I had so much on DVDs already. There was a time when Canadian shops like dvdboxoffice and dvdsoon and others had good prices and did send each DVD in a single envelope to avoid customs charges. This worked like a charm for years...until it didn't. I practically stopped collecting then. I only buy a few titles once in a while.

I really like what Criterion has done and these titles capture the spirit of the label perfectly (IMO).

My approach to this was to pick worthy titles that are either unique to the CC, or that represent a huge upgrade over BDs available elsewhere in the world, either in terms of cuts or AV quality.

For example, the long version of Andrei Rublev is unavailable in the U.K. due to the BBFC’s ruling on animal cruelty; the CC of Chimes at Midnight represents a huge step up in AV quality over the U.K. Mr. Bongo release; etc.

I read about this with regard to "War and Peace" which will be unavailable in the UK for the same reason. I have the 5 disc box set by the Russian Cinema Council already but I wanted to see what the Criterion has to offer. The BluRay looks fantastic, I bought the DVD nonetheless. I guess it will be an improvement on DVD as well.
Ah, great movies, I have those too. The Belgian movie is...very special. I like Benoît Poelvoorde. "Une place sur la Terre" is another little movie I liked.
I still remember how my hands sweat when I watched "The Wages Of Fear" for the first time. It was so thrilling I could hardly watch. Great film!

Yeah, that was a bummer. I was planning to pick up the U.K. release — had it on preorder, actually — but then it got cancelled. Whoever is running the U.K. arm of Criterion isn’t clued up on the law here, or even who the rights holders are for certain titles. For example, they announced A Matter of Life and Death a while back then had to withdraw it from their release schedule when they quickly became aware that the U.K. rights are held by ITV.

Anyway, I may pick up the U.S. CC of War and Peace eventually, but it’s no longer a priority, given the current exchange rate.

Larry Crowne. No wait. Critereon still hasn't made that available, the 3 hour Road show 70mm version Directors Cut. Apparently Critereon thinks, you know, Ozu, Bergman, Fellini, Herzog, those guys, are all more important. well!

I was driving myself crazy trying to pick five from among the multiple titles I have from Bergman, Kubrick, Kurosawa, Lynch, Waters, & Welles, so I picked my five favorite onesies:

    Godzilla
    The Asphalt Jungle
    Judex
    Vampyr
    The Wages of Fear
