Keith Richards. Straight as the shaft of an ... er, arrow, that one. How else do you think he’s lived to such a ripe old age?

I believe we should exclude pot to have a reasonable conversation on a subject.

Oh yes, I know all that, and maybe that's what El Becko was referring to with those titles. But, considering it was the seventies, you never know...
Easy- clearly Keith Richards stumbled across the secret of Eternal Life in all that smack and Merck pharmaceutical blow:laugh: Seriously, though, I don't doubt that occasionally in quiet moments Keith must look back and ask himself, "How the hell can I still be alive?" Fortunately, not unlike guys like David Crosby or Eric Clapton, Keith Richards knows damned well just how lucky he is.

Its been years since I read it but Chuck Negron paints Wells as miserly in his book, I dont think he would have spent his money on drugs. Chuck on the other hand....

I just read Daltrey's book. Circa '73 he was on tour-doctor-obtained Mandrax/Quaaludes to wind down after the marathon shows (and sleep through Moon's room trashing sessions). Says it was awful and screwed with his mind/body chemistry.

As far as Brian May and John Deacon - they might not have partaken in powders or herbs, but they liked to drink their fair share. The Munich days got those guys all wound up, one way or the other - Brian May has admitted as much.

Even allowing for that, Springsteen would still be on this list....

Zappa probably did more drugs than Ian.
Mr. Mackaye was the original "straight edge" dude.

Surprised to hear someone in Scotland lumping drugs and alcohol together. I use single-malt beverages as condiments here.

Chris DeVoe RIP Vickie Mapes Williams (aka Equipoise)

Caffeine and nicotine were his substances of abuse. But from what I understand, he was harsh on people using drugs while trying to play his music because it was just not possible to play it up to the expected standard while high.

Lenny Breau was 'educational' to him in more ways than one.

In the 'post-Soul Giants' era when the stakes became higher, Frank got more serious about his music and expected his band to fall in line.

John Prine, "When I Get To Heaven":

When I get to heaven, I'm gonna shake God's hand
Thank him for more blessings than one man can stand
Then I'm gonna get a guitar and start a rock-n-roll band
Check into a swell hotel; ain't the afterlife grand?

And then I'm gonna get a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale
Yeah, I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long...

To be fair, even Love admitted to using pot in the 60s, but never after 1967. It's kind of funny that almost everyone I ever knew that never, ever used drugs and didn't even drink beer & wine, had an overbearing personality. I think the Love Machine fits my own personal stereotype.

i think we need to take some of the autobiographies with a grain of salt.....im sure if prince had written one, his purpleness would've been a bastion of clean living

I'm guessing you have proof of this? I'm not being a smartass...just that Randy has always maintained he's never taken any drugs or partaken in alcohol, and I've never seen any interviews or read any stories that have even hinted otherwise.

I guess Bruce sneaks in at 1979... Drugs and addiction not really a hindrance to Maiden (other than Di'Anno and Burr, from the original lineup), as they're all fairly straight, but they all drink a lot and Bruce used marijuana as a young adult. (Source: "What does this button do?")

Yep, they might have taken so many drugs that they can't remember taking drugs.

Mike has admitted he smoked pot and drank booze until around 1968, but nothing excessive. And I’m sure Al smoked a little ganja or hashish, too...again, nothing excessive. I think Bruce was/is very likely a teetotaler. Nothing wrong with that.
