In the long-running thread about similar album covers, people post a bunch of obvious homages. Now in this thread, we're starting to run into a bunch of covers that are similar but clearly not intentional homages. Sorry, folks, but just because some covers look kinda similar doesn't make one of them an "homage"!
The "Similar album covers from different artists" threads are favorites: Similar album covers from different artists Similar album covers from different artists (pt2) However, I have thusly transgressed there. My post here, though, belongs. Missed the previous "Album covers that pay homage to other album covers" thread: Album covers that pay homage to other album covers Now that we have current threads for both, perhaps entropy will diminish. Similar: Similar album covers from different artists (pt2) Homage: Album Covers that are an homage to an earlier album cover
Not sure how to post the image, but Stone Temple Pilots Number 4 and Bowie’s Blackstar are pretty identical. Also Achtung Baby and Pearl Jam’s No Code, also The Charlatans Us & Us Only are very similar. There was also a Bon Jovi album with a similar design.
The covers weren’t quite the same, nor was the music, but Sgt Pepper certainly inspired Satanic Majesties
I don't think an artist repeating their own album idea twice can be considered to be an homage. Homage is a public display of honour and respect. Obviously honouring and respecting your own work would a bit of a suspect thing to do.
Here's one I designed and did the photoshoot for. The first album by Dutch/English band Perfect Vacuum was made as a re-imagining or re-writing of the earlier cover for Switched on Bach by Wendy Carlos. Definitely more homage than pastiche. The rear cover featured a remaking of the Gong Camembert inside or rear cover at the farm house.
