Very sad about this. I love Jeopardy and I've watched it since I was a kid. Alex is such a huge part of it--a familiar and trusted presence to keep it running smoothly. I don't know that I've ever heard him stumble or misspeak when reading the clues out. He's a true professional.

Whenever they do get a new host, they need to look for someone like Alex--professional, mature and not looking to make themselves the star. Generations of Jeopardy fans love Alex and there's a reason for it.

My wife was diagnosed in May and gone in October. For most, it's too late once pancreatic cancer is discovered. Johns Hopkins pioneered a surgical procedure called the "whipple" for those in the earliest stage of this insidious disease. And here I'll make a pitch for the Lustgarten Foundation that's devoted to research into early detection. Unlike so many other organizations, Lustgarten (caution advised when googling this!) is totally underwritten so every dime contributed goes to research.

Patrick Swayze managed to live 22 months with it, and filmed a much more physically taxing television show "The Beast" while undergoing treatment. Not to mention he continued to smoke through the whole ordeal.

Musician Johnny Clegg is hitting the 4 year mark later this year.

    There are exceptions.

For those diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer during the time period of 2008 to 2014, American Cancer Society reports the 5-year survival rate is 3%.

Oh? What else have you got? I’m curious.

Smug and somewhat condescending is the best I can do. I don’t watch the show that much though.

How about this? You think Trebek comes across as intelligent to people just because he "knows" the Jeopardy answers? Bless your heart.

Yep, pretty much what said before. He has the freaking answers right in front of him yet he has this way of making the contestants that get it wrong like “sorry, *******”.

Like you, I also don't watch the show often. But I don't interpret his interactions with the contestants that way from what I have seen. Anyway, his "intelligent" reputation is based on more than holding the Jeopardy answers -- do you honestly think that Pat Sajak, for example, would pull off the role like Trebek does?

No, Sajak is not nearly as condescending.

Sajak regularly deals with much dumber contestants than Trebek does! :D

Swayze actually lived 20 months after being diagnosed. That is exceptional (and unusual) for stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Clegg was at stage II when diagnosed, so that's a different thing. Being diagnosed at stage IV unfortunately makes prospects grim for Trebeck.

Clegg was initially diagnosed as Stage II, but it was later moved to stage IV in 2017.

I remember when Alex first hosted the show, I told my friend (also a Jeopardy! Fan)
"He's no Art Fleming". I used to watch him as host of "High Rollers" in the '70s (Alex had a sort of "white man's afro" and a porn 'stache) which was rather lowbrow in comparison to Jeopardy!)
Now, of course, it's hard to imagine anyone else hosting the show, except of course, Art Fleming!

Sadly too relatable as I know a close family member with stage 1. Not something anyone should ever get.
