I know Lou's lyrics are weird, but the Metallica heavy driving music backing him sounds great to me. It is a very interesting album in my opinion.
I love it, and there's a lot of back and forth on it in this thread. By the by, it's Lulu. LULU-lou reed/metallica anybody reconsidered its value....
No, I don’t love it but I do like it a lot. It’s way more listenable than Metallica’s S&M and Lou Reed’s The Raven, IMHO...
I like it. I can understand why many don't, but I do. It's relentless and a great final statement from Lou, flipping the bird to the world as he walks away. "Junior Dad" is pure gold, Pony Boy. Bowie liked the record too, so I know I'm not crazy.
Great record on both fronts. Metallica raw not overproduced and Lou's uncompromising story and lyrics. Perfect. Offends fans of both artists just existing. So perfect. I love this record. Rockin.
LULU. I like it a lot and also like that it offends people. It's very, very dark and angry. I don't know how much of the lyrics are lifted from Frank Wedekind's plays and/or how much Lou rewrote them. Not interesting in converting anyone though; intelligent rock music is not for everyone.
I think that if it was released much earlier in Metallica's career it would have been received differently and maybe achieved "cult status" on artistic merit. Metallica was too big and too popular with an established formula and sound by the time Lulu was released. It never really had a chance.
Lou's aged voice also turned a lot of people off I think...If it had been Blue Mask era Lou delivering those lyrics, I think they would have been better received.
I give credit to the guys in Metallica for not publicly bad mouthing the record, at least not that I've heard.
I read about the record and especially criticism of lou's voice, but to me he sounds like lou. Not much different than anything he had done. He ain't pavoroti...
It was exactly the right album for Lou to have gone out on, angry, messy, uncompromising, a big middle finger to everyone and everything. A great artistic achievement because it pulled no punches, critics and fans be damned. Kudos to Metallica for being involved and for bringing the stomp.
Funny enough, I listened to it for the first time two days ago. And I will say, that Lou went out with an album that pissed people off is rather fitting.
Great album....perfect collaboration.......Lou was...well....Lou.....but he pushed and stretched Metallica......I love it. A surprisingly great album to play in the gym by the way......
No, you’re not. It’s wonderful. Perfect in the way Lou managed to get his greatest composition as the last song on his last album. Junior Dad. The tune that drove 3 out of 4 members of Metallica out of the control room in tears. They hadn’t heard the lyrics until he sang them. Hit a little too close to home.
