"Rhino has a pretty impressive coupla albums headed your way featuring The Doors. One of them is a 2CD collection, The Absolute Best of The Doors, while the other set, The Complete Studio Recordings, is a humongous 7CD box that brings together all six of the band's originals into one set with a bonus disc of rarities. The set is remastered with each disc being sleeved in cardboard jackets that replicate the original LP. This 7CD box is a repackaging of the original 7CD brick"

The Absolute Best Of was discussed in another thread BUT what the heck are they doing to the Complete Studio recordings. Why are they reissuing this???? It doesn't seem any different!

Good question. Why do record companies "repackage" items without changing a lick? What gives?

Well, mebbe it's time for BI at Rhino to brighten those Doors masters up a bit - a little midrange boost, some treble sizzle and bass cut will make 'em sound good to the thumpy car stereo set. Oh yeah, maximize the crap out of them so they're REALLY LOUD.....

This box set has been promised on the Doors' website for over a year. As yet there is nothing on the Rhino site about it. The extra disc is to feature entirely new studio treasures not on the previous extra discs in earlier box sets, such as the studio version of "Celebration Of The Lizard". Sometime later the box set contents will be offered as individual discs. You can read all about it at www.the doors.com.

They are replacing the Essential Rarities 'bonus' disc that came with the boxset with a CD off genuine outtakes. The 4CD Doors rarities boxset and Essential Rarities disc were very hastily and shoddily assembled and featured very little studio outtakes. The story is the Bruce Botnick and CO found a 'plethora' of outtakes and they will be released on the new revamped Complete Recordings box and on a later Bright Midnight Records release with more outtakes.

Some of the outtakes include the studio version of Celebration of the Lizard, the XXX rated version of Roadhouse Blues and the legendary LA Woman outtake Paris Blues.

and still no 45 rpm version of "light my fire" on compact disc.

oh, wait they are saving that as a bonus track for the 25-cd set called "every single damn thing that we have ever put on cd by the doors can now be found in one place" :)

absolutely ridiculous, shame on anyone over the age of 15 who keeps buying these things, shame.

I got the studio recordings box set and I love it. It's the best I've heard of this material and yes I have Steve's discs as well as other issues.
I don't plan on buying the box again but if there are some great outtakes issued as a single disc, well, I'll spring fer it;)

I'm hoping they'll sell the "bonus" disc seperate. I don't really want to buy the exact same boxed set yet again.

I'm baffled why various "Best of The Doors" keep coming out. The tracklists for all these discs are pretty much the same. Maybe it's so they can use various Jim Morrison poses on the covers?

Bright Midnight has said on their site that 6 months after the revamped 'cube' Complete Studio Recordings is released they will release the new outtakes discs as an individual release with even more outtakes. I kid you not.

The Doors have a history of this with the 'Band Favorites' disc on the '97 4CD rarities box. How the surviving members of the band can have the b*lls to release a band favorites disc on a rarities set is beyone me.

Of all the greedy defunct bands that recycle the same material over and over, The Doors have to be the greediest, most recycle-crazy band on the planet. There have been so many reissues and remasters and special editions and collectors editions and videos and DVDs I can't keep track of them anymore. In the begining, with the first round of remasters and the VHS tapes, I believed the Doors' claim that they were doing it all for the fans. Now, after countless remasterings and repackagings of the same basic material and the recent "reunion," I'm pretty much convinced they are just sucking every cent out of the fan base that they can. I've been a fan of the music since "Light My Fire" first hit the radio, and I have all the SH DCCs (great work, Steve!), but I don't even bother to LOOK at new Doors stuff anymore. I know that anything I buy today will just show up in a new package/collection later, which will show up in another package/collection after that. I'm at the point where I'd find the whole thing kind of humorous it it didn't seem so sad. I guess when your standard of living is dependent on a bunch of stuff you did 35 years ago and you're living off a legacy it could prompt you to do stuff like this if you could get away with it. It seems the Doors can. That they seem SO willing take advantage of that fact is just another indication that they just ain't The Doors anymore. I kind of feel sorry for these guys, in a way. Just a bunch of old geezers who did something great a long time ago, still trying to milk the memory for whatever it's worth.

Ooof, not again. People should look into the Bright Midnight stuff for crying out loud. No more feeding Love Street into people a million different ways.

No hi-end release of the other albums either. Weird? I think so! They won't even get the LA Woman cover right. Maybe that's for 2008.

How about scratch and sniff redbook Doors CDs from Elektra? :)

I think there's DVD-A of LA Woman, but that's about it. I'm very surprised that the entire catalog hasn't been issued on DVD-A and SACD! Of course then you could put out a "Complete Boxed Set" of the DVD-A and SACD stuff.

That's what I meant about the other albums. :) I have LA Woman on DVD-A. A very strange animal. Interesting nonetheless. The stereo mix sounds ok, the surround is definately like listening to a remake of the National Anthem!

I heard the LA Woman DVD-A sounds amazing and there are bits here and there that have not been on previous CD issues.

I'm not that big of fan so I'll just stick with my homemade CD-R comp.

I wish they would do a 2CD anthology with all of the good stuff including the uncensored tracks on the first album. The complete box set is way too much for me, but it's the only place to find the uncensored versions AFAIK.

no, it's not that one. the list price they have on that is waaaaay too high! I can get it at about half their SALE price!
The set I'm referring to is a cube box with a flip top lid that has all the studio albums with original lp packaging, orig. elektra labels on the cds, even the original inner sleeves! L.A. Woman has the original 'clear window' cover as well, and there is an extra disc that contains rarities from the box set you had a link to. The sound on these is really incredible and the first album has the 'uncensored' versions of Break On Through and The End.

Warner announced recently that there will be two DOors DVDAs out this year, though they failed to elaborate. I will go out on a limb and say that one will be The Absolutely Best of the Doors, while the other will probably be The Doors Greatest Hits.

 Geez, I hope not! I'll take The Doors and Strange Days, thank you. :)

What is really ridiculous about the new two-disc compilation is that WEA is making it clear that it is milking The Doors for all they are worth with that "absolutely" moronic title. :(

Lennonfan, you're so right. This boxset is superb. I have all the DCC lp Doors and this boxset blows all versions away. I tried telling everyone on this site this a while back, but not many listen.

    Cheers.
