Those Hoagy tracks have a special place in my heart. Hearing them on that album is what got me to discover his music, and, from there, Bix Beidebecke.

The songs themselves are fine, they just feel out of place on there, to me.

I love the three in a row -

    "George Harrison",
    "Somewhere In England",
    and "Gone Troppo".

And the Hoagy Carmichael songs are great!

By the way, here's trivia question -

There's a reference to Hoagy Carmichael on "The White Album".

    Any guesses?

Brainwashed is a criminally underrated album, and in his top 5 best IMO. I think my top 5 goes like this

    LITMW
    ATMP
    Brainwashed
    Extra Texture
George Harrison ST (maybe 33 1/3)

Have to agree. The more uptight and miserable he is the better the songs.

33 & 1/3 and Cloud Nine are the only two that really match ATMP. An honourable mention goes to the self-titled album.

I think it's bad reputation is more because his voice was shot during the recording of this album.
However, I'm with you- I like the "Dark Horse" album very much as well.

Gone Troppo is one of those albums that I pull out every 3 or 4 years and play, hoping to find some charms that had previously escaped me. But it's never happened.

Re: Somewhere in England, I do like the released version, including the Hoagy Carmichael tracks, but it's not my favorite George album.

Living In the Material World is probably the obvious choice... but I love '33 1/3' and 'Extra Texture.' I should probably go back and listen to 'George Harrison' and 'Somewhere In England' as they seem to be getting a lot of love here... I'm embarrassed to admit that while I loved 'Cloud 9' I've never heard 'Brainwashed.' I feared it was a bad posthumous release... based on what I've just read, apparently I was terribly wrong.

I love Material World. Some people think it's dirgey or preachy, I think it's beautiful. It's late night, lights off listening.
I too like Dark Horse. I think at points it almost reaches a Plastic Ono rawness on tracks like Bye Bye Love and Simply Shady. He's clearly not in a good place, but it's interesting listening for that reason.

The only two that don't quite reach the mark for me are Somewhere In England and Cloud 9. SIE had the miraculous All Those Years Ago, but outside of that I think the material is weak, especially coming after the '79 album. As for Cloud 9, I find the production to be too "cold" sounding, which isn't what I want in a Harrison record. Gone Troppo was so warm and bright too. Jeff Lynne did work wonders with the Wilbury's though, so he gets a pass.

Was just checking out George's singles chart action and saw that in '73 ' Give Me Love ' displaced Macca's ' My Love ' from the Number One slot.
This must have pleased him ( if he was even aware of it ).
Of course it only stayed at #1 for a week while McCartney's was there for four.
    That must have pleased McCartney.
For what it's worth, I prefer ' Give Me Love '

Living In The Material Word is his best album hands down. Closely followed by the 1979 Self-Titled album.
