I find this particularly unlistenable. The sitar makes no sense

Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
She shouts it. None of the poignancy and tenderness of Dolly Parton’s.

Natalie Merchant - Because The Night
Adds nothing to it to make it her own

This is also bad, from Procol Harum, yet I love their version of I Keep Forgettin' from the same album:

haha, yeah, possibly in part agita over her godawful cover, (wouldn't blame them) but certainly about her shooting Spider Sabich to death when he tried to end their relationship.

Like the Who, R.E.M. was made up of four distinct, often conflicting personalities who, in spite of their differences, somehow found each other, worked well together, and created their own unique sound. This is because there was a sense of balance at play. This sense of balance extended all the way to the Berry-Buck-Mills-Stipe crediting of the songs, but I digress.
Yes, R.E.M. had a sense of humour, but it was subtle, dry, and (for fans) largely dependent on one’s understanding of the disparate personalities within the group.
So in the case of “Toys in the Attic” (initially a throwaway B-side; later included on their odds and sods collection, Dead Letter Office), you've got a situation in which the balance I mentioned is thrown out of whack.
First you’ve got Peter Buck—analog rock nerd/amateur rock historian...he’s a Hoffmanite in all but name and equipment profile. If he were not the one who suggested the cover, I’d be very surprised.
Then you’ve got Michael Stipe: artsy, moody, detached, aloof, enigmatic—pretty much the antithesis of Peter Buck... not to mention Steven freaking Tyler!

So for a brief moment, Buck got to indulge his guitar hero fantasies and Stipe gamely played along, and allowed himself to drop the veneer of mysteriousness and become immensely vulnerable.

Maybe not slap-your-thigh funny like “Cobwebs and Strange,” but for fans of the group it’s a beloved little knockoff. A sweet moment.

I know that, but it made me laugh that she also murdered Let's Spend The Night Together.

I love Muddy Waters' cover from Electric Mud though; Electric Mud is one of my favourite underrated albums.

    :D

She was truly a Killer Queen. Incredibly, she still lives in Aspen, where all that went on. That has to have made for a strange existence, Sabich being a favorite son there. :sigh:

Yes.........that was why it was in the can for so long. It was written as the trial took place in 1977/78, but was never released.

Ironically, not long after this a young man died in a firearm incident, Russian roulette, indirectly involving Anita Pallenberg.

The way he pronounces 'hawt dooogs' like he's never heard of 'em! But the guitar break (taking the place of strings on the original) is kinda nice actually.

It's fine if you like them all, but do you really hear them all as being on the same level? IMHO "and also..." are in ascending order.

  24. Almost half of The Beach Boys - 15 Big Ones album consists of lame to atrocious covers.

There are some good original songs too.

  25. Nah, his cover of “Common People” beats the original to a, er, Pulp.
