So basically what these threads all come down to is if you don't write songs or play virtuoso solos than you're not important.

We've already had a thread about Pete vs Roger as lead singer. The premise of the thread is OK, but your example is ridiculous.

Ridiculous. Let’s just start with Roger Daltrey being one of the premiere lead vocalists and frontmen in rock music history. Townshend’s demos are interesting, but Daltrey’s vocals bring them to a whole different level...not that Pete doesn’t provide an excellent vocal counterpoint. Add that he plays some rhythm guitar (It’s Hard album) and harmonica (Join Together), and had a couple of songs that he either wrote or co-wrote, and your whole argument just vaporizes. Without Daltrey, The Who is not nearly the dynamic, powerhouse band in the studio and on stage that it was.

No way , early and only Pretenders were a gang and Pete was very much part of it , the real deal and not there just because he used to date Chrissie .

I think Pat Smear is cool, but I agree.

The look on his face when McCartney announced him at the 121212 concert says it all. "I'm just a punk guy bashing out power chords buried somewhere in the mix, and now I'm about to back up a Beatle - what the?!?"

So many members of this forum place way too much emphasis on writing credits. As we've seen, there are teams who are better able to exclude others and and credit themselves for minimal contributions.

That all aside, back to the topic at hand. Agreed that this is a great topic, but Roger Daltrey was a poor example by the thread starter. Vocals and instrumental ability are very important components to establishing the right sound.

Andrew Ridgeley was a terrific example. To the people going off about Ringo, could you please just stop? You guys must've been boatloads of fun at Christmas and New Year's Eve parties. Somebody asks you a question, and you yap endlessly about The Beatles.

So, my answer: Nils Lofgren. From Neil Young to East Street Band. What does he do? Clearly, he's well liked, but his playing is lost in the translation. Then with Miami Steve back, he wasn't really needed anyway.

I think Dave is just happy to have a member of the original punk guard on board, as well as someone who shared (however briefly) the whole Nirvana experience with him.
