I think it's pretty hard to break down all the bits and pieces ...

Three of the huge factors for the Beatles success

Epstein - his interest and ability got them where they needed to be

Emi - able to back up the recordings with good equipment and quality recording... so the band didn't have the indignity of having their music recorded on third rate second hand leftovers

Martin - the final piece to the puzzle. It isn't that Martin is the best recorder and producer of all time, it's that he was perfectly suited to That band at That time. He encouraged them to experiment and he managed to lock into their style, and knew best how to embellish it.

Let It Be isn't a good example of The Beatles minus Martin, because they were nearing the end of their ability to do The Beatles.... I actually think it's an excellent album, I like the songs, but it is a little patched together.... I think that's because they had a plan, but the plan didn't come together (no pun intended lol) and so we gets a sort of bits and pieces assortment of things from different mindsets and different recording scenarios....

The real thing is, everything came together for The Beatles.... Right band, right place, right time... and that isn't to undermine their ability at all. They developed as songwriters so well, because the took off from the first recording, and that instills confidence, and the whole thing turned into the juggernaut we know today.

There are bands I prefer, but I do love The Beatles, and really we are blessed with the music that their abilities and fortunate circumstances gave us.

Two Virgins in the hands of George Martin would have been very succesful! For him that is…

Your post very aptly emphasizes the fact that everything happened in the perfect order, in the perfect time period. It’s really an impossibility to take one aspect, one event, one person out of the overall scenario and give a simplified “what if” type response.

I wonder whether George Martin would have written Game Of Thrones if he'd never met the Beatles. Very clever basing a kingdom on each of their personalities. :)

Let's get real here, they'd have made it big without George Martin, might have taken a bit longer but...

They probably wouldn't have made it very far. To be fair the engineers Norman Smith and especially Geoff Emerick helped a lot as well. Whats the deal with The White Album though did Martin leave at some point and come back and Geoff Emerick left for good around this time? The stories are mixed it depends who's talking. I've heard everything from Chris Thomas to some songs self produced

Like Elton John without Bernie Taupin. The musical talent would be intact, but there would be something missing.

  23. Well, as evidenced by the pre-George Martin Beatles, not a chance. The Beatles had their local Liverpool fans and their Hamburg fans, but they wouldn't have become world famous without George Martin and Brian Epstein.

With Epstein managing, had they stuck it out, eventually something pans out and success comes. That said, they would of never been as successful. George Martin was the best producer of the 60s and Beatles records sound better than everybody else's in the genre or anything similar.
