Glad to see UFO getting some recognition. I feel like they don't get enough credit for what an amazing band they were. Interesting that you would name Steve Howe and John Wetton....When I think of Yes sounding like the guitars and bass were really in lockstep sounding wonderful, its songs like "Starship Trooper" "America" (yeah the Simon and Garfunkel cover...I absolutely LOVE how Yes does it) or "Don't Kill the Whale" from the Chris Squire years.
I was never a huge Joe Jackson fan but man....I think Gary Sanford – guitar & Graham Maby – bass sounded pretty fantastic. When I think of songs like "Is she really going out with him" or "I'm the Man" those guys are COOKING
I have all the Hellborg CD's. Freaking superlative stuff. Sipe ain't no slouch on the drums either. I never felt like Berlin was melded as an integral part of Holdsworth music. But YMMV of course. Great player for sure. It just wasn't on equal terms like a lot of the preceding examples. Just my opinion.
I don’t think of them as guitar/bass … but as two lead instruments. I think I’d third this combo. I’d also add Eric Johnson and Kyle Brock/Roscoe Beck too … I can’t say which bassist is better but they each seem telepathically linked when playing with Eric.
Cropper/Duck Dunn Jimmy Johnson/David Hood (The Swampers) Bruce Conte/Rocco Prestia (Tower of Power) Teenie & Leroy Hodges (Hi Rhythm) Bingy Bunny/Flabba Holt (Roots Radics) Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards Bootsy Collins (Guitar) and Bill Laswell (Bass) Anybody/Ron Carter
Fripp & Lake- Wetton Wetton- Holdsworth Shulman- Green Townshend- Entwistle Howe- Squire Hackett- Rutherford Just a few combos of many greats.
Pat Travers and Mars Cowling Frank Zappa and Patrick O'Hearn Todd Rundgren and Kasim Sulton Allan Holdsworth and Jimmy Johnson
Very good but I think Thunes locked in with him better though I do think the rhythm section pf Zappa/O’Hearn/Bozzio was pretty incredible.
I once heard a tennis expert asked who were the greatest doubles partnership ever. His answer was John McEnroe and anyone. With that in mind I'll say Ritchie Blackmore and anyone.
