+ 1 for Slick Anyway, IMHO, an US GP on both sides from 73 (or 77), plays better than an original UK plum from 69 (or US from 69)!!!
The George Piros all the way. I actually have (2) monarch pressings of his cutting of Led Zeppelin I. I also have the reissue and it's not bad, but I don't think it measures up to the GP. In addition, the GP George Piros cutting of LZ II is almost as good as the original Bob Ludwig version that everyone covets. I also have the Ludwig version of that as well and its hard for me to make a decision of which one I like better. George Piros was an incredible mastering engineer. He did the Led Zeppelin catalog right among someother titles he remastered.
I got sooo close today! SD 8216 beautiful jacket so much pure white and black. Monarch. Broadway... and A cuts both sides. RG. Not the Piros. Still, the inner is Joe Tex so probably Fall 1969. Lp looks VG but its playing VG+ and sounding great! The jacket is excellent. I would have preferred the Piros, but this is a real nice early pressing, glad to have it at the nice price!
I picked up another AT/GP LZI. This one is a PR with Broadway labels. One of the cleanest I have seen. Cover has some pinholes where someone used it as a poster but they didn't seem to play the vinyl much. No spindle marks and LP plays VG++ to NM, all for $12 in the used bin. Sound is absolutely stunning with incredible detail.
I recently purchased through a Discogs merchant what I thought was a 1969 Presswell pressing of LZ I. After further review it looks like I received a late 70’s version because the label has the 75 Rockefeller address, but the catalog number on the label is SD 8216. I’ve not seen this variation of catalog number with a 75 Rockefeller address on the label before. Has anyone seen this before? I can post a pic if it helps.
ok thanks Slick Willie.... do you know if this is a decent pressing. I've not had a chance to listen to it yet as I'm in the middle of a move.
I took the advice of some respected members here and finally pulled the trigger on a UK Plum label A//1 B//1. My first impression is that, compared to the Piros, it's smooth and refined. Crystal clear highs though that sounded fast. Its pretty awesome. I want to join UPTIGHT AND OUTTASIGHT.
@Slick Willie looking past your UK preference, what do you believe is best US Zep s/t? I always thought RG was better than GPs. GPs seem loud and have a coloration. My opinion of course.
True, the Piros is.......exuberant. The RG, while having an element of veiling, is also a fun spin when applied with the correct amount of volume. I like both and chose which to spin according to mood.
Looking for a little help identifying this Zep I pressing: 75 Rockefeller with WB logo. SD 8216 ST-A- 681461-A LW AT PR-P RG W ST-A-681462-B LW PR Per, which is very tiny. It seems to be the 1974 reissue. Side two has no Rob Grenell initials
It's ok in my opinion..........I prefer a mid 70's George Piros, look for at/gp on both sides in the deadwax. There are quite a few one sided gp's out there, so be careful. If you like the Grenell cut, look for an early one.....Broadway address on the label, thick vinyl with A stampers on both sides.
