I think the technical word for this is a “caesura.”

Anyway, Bowie’s “Young Americans” is the first that comes to my mind.

Legend has it it was a mistake in a splice but the producer Bones Howe to his credit kept it in. Really lifts the record in my opinion.

Overexposure has perhaps dulled the impact a bit, but The Contours’ “Do You Love Me” has to stand as one of the ultimate examples.

A radio station I used to listen to in my teens used to fill the gap in “The Look” with a little comedy soundbite, something different every time they played it. It made me really look forward to hearing the song.

The first one I thought of was in “The Ocean” by Led Zeppelin, between the la-la-la section and the last verse. There’s a real kick to the way they come out of that. But my favourite is probably the short one just before the guitar solo in “Don’t Fear the Reaper.”

It took five pages to get to it! The single greatest false ending on record.

SO many good ones here, at the beginning and at the end.

"Molina", a CCR classic that receives little airplay - possibly because of dead air built into the song at 2 min 2 sec.

Always liked the huge volume swell back into the verse in Metallica’s “the shortest straw” ...

With the Stone Roses already mentioned - to me, not even the Resurrection can top "Standing Here" in this category.

Never have the simple words "I could park a juggernaut in your mouth" meant so much.

Denny actually came in to early, jumped the gun ...they carried on with the take and after playback they liked it and decided to leave it as it was. No splicing involved.
