Try the Jerry Lee Lewis documentary that T-Bone Burnett put together. Loaded with very impressive rhythm piano playing. Although in a couple of those clips, Lewis also shows off more fancy chops than I ever thought he had. Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind (2022) ⭐ 6.5 | Documentary, Biography, Music Also, anyone who wants to hear excellent examples of how Original 50s Rock'n'Roll is played needs to watch that. Most all of the performances are Live, including the TV slots. Not a lip-synch. It's all too obvious from the way Jerry Lee is playing piano. And his bands- trios or quartets- stay in the pocket. They rock and they swing.
Hard to go wrong with ol' Fess! Love this one, especially whenever he hits the "3" with the left hand:
Nils Lofgren on piano, "Southern Man" on Neil Young's After The Goldrush. I had assumed that the piano on Blows Against The Empire was done by Nicky Hopkins, or maybe Pete Sears- and someone on the Forum corrected me, and informed me it was Grace Slick! Sure enough.
I love Carly Simon's piano playing here on "Another Door" as much as I do her vocals. Also... I always thought the drummer was Russ Kunkel (sounds just like him if you know his style) but I just found out it's the late John Siomos (of Peter Frampton Fame).
Robert Lamm and a lot more of his, but this is beautiful. Chicago - "Something In This City Changes People"
Lots of good rhythm piano (and songs!) on Nils' first S/T solo album. Not his first instrument, so his playing even more impressive.
I would also go with Nicky Hopkins as the top, he has so many great possible examples, and I've always enjoyed his playing much more than Elton. Jerry Lee Lewis would probably be my second choice. Leon Russell my third. Can't leave out Ray Charles.
