With all due respect, the artistic leap between the first Dylan album and his second is one of the greatest in recorded history. On the first, he's a Woody Guthrie imitator doing mostly covers, some of which are very average. To paraphrase one of his later songs, he's not different than anyone here. He could be you or me. He showed almost no potential for growth or originality.

On the second, he wrote and recorded five songs that became standards, civil rights anthems, and/or hits for others. And the rest of the songs are pretty good too. On this album, he became one of the premiere songwriters of the 20th century. People cite these songs in defining an entire era. If you want to explain '60s social change to someone, this is the album you pull out.
