How often do you encounter Tommy Nola's name as an engineer on jazz recordings? I often do and I always find the sound uniformly relaxed and natural, with a nicely painted stereo image. I'm looking for more info on the man and his studio but couldn't find much on the internet, except this bit by engineer Glen Kolotkin:

Are there any photos from this studio? Do any of you know anything about it?

Here's some of the LPs recorded there:
Bill Evans - Interplay *I know Steve mastered this for 45-r.p.m. Was the master tape indeed 2-track?
    Art Farmer - Modern Art
    Ahmad Jamal at the Penthouse
    Gerry Mulligan - Night Lights
Roland Kirk - We Free Kings & Domino
Art Farmer/Benny Golson - Meet the Jazztet
    Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus
    Milt Jackson - Bags' Opus
    Benny Golson - Free
    Randy Weston - African Cookbook

Right after posting this, I remembered I had the Jazztet Mosaic Set. Duh! :o
I scanned some of the photos.

This was the cover for "Meet the Jazztet". It's staged and all mics are gone, but you can see part of the studio in color, including the bright yellow curtain behind the drums.

How the hell did I ever miss this thread?

So sorry. The Nola Penthouse Studio sounded wonderful, yes.

The place was a two-track studio. No mixing except live. I'm listening to Bill Evans INTERPLAY and it sounds really great, no piano overload, nice, balanced sound and stereo image.

Great studio and thanks for the photos!

OK... I don't have the Interplay record, and I LOVE Evans, so I must have it... but which one? The SACD is 80 bucks on Amazon, but I wouldn't pay that for any audio recording. What about the Interplay Sessions collections?

Just get the old OJC CD. 8 bucks. I do NOT like the SACD.

Also, everyone should have a OJC or DCC copy of Bill Evans/Cannonball Adderley "Know What I Mean", another sonic winner, this time from Bill Stoddard at Bell Sound.

I am listening to the SHM-SACD. One of my favorites. Sounds great. A look at the data shows audio out to 30 khz, of course past then the Delta Sigma noise takes over. There is also an interesting hump in the ultrasonic noise that I have come to associate with DSD processing... probably Sonoma DSD-Wide. Still, sounds very, very nice.

I see where Acoustic Sounds has it for a hefty sum. I didn't pay near that much for it. I would definitely buy the vinyl before I paid that price!

'Know What I Mean' is outstanding! I have it on SACD too.. Analogue Productions.

I can't say otherwise, since I haven't heard the CD mastering. But, without any reference for comparison, the SACD sounds quite good to me. Same for Interplay on SHM-sacd. Can't say the same for all SHM-SACD's. Actually, I typically prefer MoFi or AP to the SHM masterings. But, again, without some other reference, many of them sound quite good. Even outstanding.

I, too, enjoy the Nola sound, it occurred to me that there must be many more recordings than the ten listed in the intro for the studio to have been financially viable, so knowledgeable jazz fans out there bring 'em on!!!

These photos were taken on July 27, 1959 at the Thelonious Monk Session for the French film Dangerous Liaison.
