Peter Gabriel achieved a UK no 1 album in the run up to Christmas with just black vinyl, albeit in two mixes, along with CD/BluRay. Total of four variants to choose from. He just conducted a well thought out year long campaign in the run up to release.
It does not matter how many variants 1 lp = 1 lp regardless of format Once you have it: TT and phono amp 20 W? Only while using it downloads/streaming: Streamer, wifi, modem, likely some powered 24x7 And consume much more power Then the source: Servers/power/hvac/ups and batteries Large footprints Plus making all the equipment using precious metals and resources Then it must be transmitted to you: Satellite Cable Fiber Switches, hubs Cellular Orders of magnitude greater impact. Ecologically and resource wide it is not even comparable. People with a platform seldom understand what they are pontificating about.
Not to derail this Thread, but The Interwebs™ says that carbon has become a pollutant. Nothing is free, everything has a cost and the price attached to buying Vinyl now is laughable.
Really... so no problem with Led Zeppelin's "In Through The Out Door"...I'm assuming LZ was not into music 45 years ago.
I have Eilish and C0v!d linked in my brain because she was set to play an arena date here in 2020, which got cancelled, and which was scheduled at a critical career/business juncture. Very happy to read now that she doesn't seem to have lost momentum as a live act.
But divide the impact of your equipment by the number of people using it (one, maybe two) Compared to dividing the impact streaming infrastructure by the billions using it for that and the other coubtless uses for thee World Wide Web.
Given how much plastic we use - especially in packaging - vinyl seems like a relatively minor concern. A record can provide a lifetime of enjoyment, too. I'm sure most posters have records from the 1950s and 1960s. Indeed, I'd argue all the phones used for streaming (which are often replaced every few years) cause far more damage to the environment.
This is an update/same 'ol Billie Eilish slams other musicians for being ‘wasteful’ with various versions of their vinyl records I guess something like the Taylor Swift "clock" is, well, a collectible for fans, like a KISS coffin or something. How many pounds of carbon does it take to make a KISS coffin? What's the environmental impact of embalming fluid? And cremating that stuff? (shades of 9/11 pyrolized whatever). I specified not to be embalmed, told my wife and kid to donate me to science and organ donate or heck just throw me off the pier...and now back to the previous ranting... Maybe the LPs could be packaged with true carbon offsets like at the Orca plant we visited in Iceland. (Well you're not supposed to go up to that part ha ha. not much to see anyway, a lot of big fans).
I remember when that came out, my friends and I (15 years old) went to different record stores to buy our copy, hoping we would all get different ones. We didn't. We all got the "B" cover. But never ONCE did any of us think to try to find and buy all 6. Different times...
For second I thought you meant headphones, as in earbuds whose batteries die off. So add those to the list. Huh, what is the CO2 impact of 9 billion humans BREATHING?
I doubt I’m going out on some kind of crazy limb when I say that someone who makes the amount of money she does is somehow “wasteful” in certain aspects of her life.
nobody can live completely green, but there are those of us who are mindful about our actions and do all we can to try to hasten this environmental crisis we are in. Billie is one of us who does.
I shouldn’t be surprised at the forum’s blowback on needless consumerist tricks by the music industry, but I am. Those who are doing it may say you aren’t defending these practices, but it sure sounds like you are. The proliferation of LP variants gotten ridiculous in 2024. It ties up pressing plants and is wasteful in terms of the amount of plastic it generates. Where is the controversy for that? Throwing out straw man arguments doesn’t change that.
Have you seen her car collection? And before anyone flips out, she can do whatever she wants. I don’t care. It’s just hypocritical. If she just wants to make the blanket point that 40 different colored vinyls are silly, I totally agree. But if all she cares about is being green….well.
