I looked at the description for Masters of Reality and it said nothing about a 5.1 mix on the second disc. Did I miss something?

Paranoid was the only one with an historic Quad mix, so there will not be one with the other albums.

  4. Thanks for the info.

Besides the Rhino stuff in the US, the last remastering of the catalog was done in 1996 by Castle/Sanctuary.

If you go back to the very earliest days of CD, there have been quite a few versions, but at current, it's pretty simple:

Warner owns the rights in the US.

Universal (Sanctuary) owns the rights in the UK/Europe/Japan...

Dorchester Holding has rights to issue those cheapo Creative Sounds versions of the first six albums. Iommi can't stop these, obviously.

    Three companies.

I can't see myself putting out the cash for these. I have put out some bucks getting the preferred masterings of these titles and don't see these DF editions being better. The extra material in a lot of these releases aren't worth the money. You listen to the extra material once and a lot of times it's not worth a second time in the transport.

Actually, I wouldn't think it would be difficult for AF to get these. AF after all has done a few Deep Purple discs. WB too.

Anyone who's looking for a good mastering on the new ones, well, I'd be surprised. But I hope the bonus tracks are good !

Andy Pearce remastered these. Same guy who did the Paranoid Deluxe Edition that has been widely praised here.

Based on his other work, I expect them to be very good.

I prefer that Audio Fidelity does not get a hold of these. Why?

    1) Each issue would probably 2x as much or more.

    2) We might have some of the same supply questions, it not actual issues, that have cropped up with recent Audio Fidelity issues.

I do appreciate Audio Fidelity's work. But when we can get affordable, well remastered reissues (by Pearce, who did a fine job on Paranoid), what is not to love?

Whatever happened to the Paranoid SACD ? I also read about a 3 disc Paranoid with a Multi-channel DVD-A ? I'm confused ? Is there any HiRez 2 channel in any of this ? I have the 96 castle Paranoid, and would like some to try old or new.

Any tracklistings that get you some actual info?
The ones on Amazon just list the album twice (once on the first disc, once on the second) with only a couple of extra tracks and no explanation what the second discs tracks are, (ie, demos, alt takes, live, instrumentals, etc...)

Paranoid DE stereo remaster is by far the best sounding Sabbath and a great remaster all around - warm, dynamic, incredibly detailed. The new DE's are a MUST.:righton:

Jeff- As good as the Castle '86?

No funny EQ? Not brickwalled, peak limited, compressed, clipped, etc?

Very light compression and some tasteful EQ moves in the upper mids compared to the 1986 Castle and the Japan 1st press. I prefer the latter two but the DE is excellent work (even if not exactly what I'd have wanted) and absolutely essential for serious fans.

Thanks Jeff. I learn something new 'round 'ere every day ! :)

But I have become jaded in that it seems pretty rare for newer remasters to actually have any value other than cool booklets or good bonus tracks.

Right now, I have the Black Box only for the liner notes. If they do DE's for the others, maybe then I can finally dump that one and get good masterings too ! :righton:

I'm slow ;), but I get there eventually. :shh:
