Bob Dylan: "Trouble No More 1979 - 1981" - The Bootleg Series Vol. 13

Nice selection of some of the best shows from the period (from memory of the tapes). Just depends on the sources for me now, the track from Drammen sounds pretty much as I remember the soundboard, not sure if bits of it will be from the (very nice, for the most part) audience tapes. Particularly Caribbean Wind Live on the 12th is a grail recording for me - if it is from a soundboard, very exciting.

 

Yep -- I have that compilation. I think I'll give it a listen this afternoon.

 

Glad to see that the 1981 London shows are well represented. One of my favourite times of seeing Dylan. The audience were pure FANS, without the media circus of Earls Court in '78, and he was on great form. I went twice, and my memory is a bit blurred, but didn't he do "Abraham Martin and John" one night, in duet with Clydie King? And I remember some very funny antics with an electric piano before "Heart of Mine", after which he laughed and said, "Not doing that one again!" There's a lot of "Slow Trains" on this set, but the one I remember had him strutting in front of the stage monitors staring out at the audience, and a GREAT vocal delivery on "Sleepin' in a feather bed!" To paraphrase Marc Cohn, I wasn't a Christian, but man, I was that night.

Feel like the DVD is a lost opportunity. Yes, we have the 4/20/80 show out there, but this is a documentary I will probably watch exactly once, whereas an entire show would be a no-brainer repeat view.

So seems like there is an extra book in the CD version? Two to contain the cds, the floppy book that is included in both, and another large one that is with the deluxe set only?

 

Every song from Slow Train Coming and Saved (with the exception of "A Satisfied Mind"-- which wouldn't be played live until 1999) is represented on the 2CD set. Shot of Love gets much less comprehensive attention, but includes soaring versions of "Carribean Wind" and "Groom Still Waiting At The Alter" (this is its debut, and includes Carlos Santana) -- so I'm not complaining. Also glad to see "In The Summertime" here, as I think it's underrated song. 11 '79 performances, including "Covenent Woman."

Everything was perfect so far. Then there is this exclusive San Diego Show. Since the Deluxe Set has a 1980 & a 1981 show, having a 1979 show is tempting...

But that's 170 euros !

Why oh why include a documentary (on a poky DVD no less) which will be available separately in the near future? This is yet another deviation for the Bootleg Series. I'm sure most of us would have much preferred a restored concert film on BD?
